Ambubachi ends when the Sun passes the first quarter of the star Ardra, and the Kamakhya temple opens again for darshan.
How it is kept
When the period ends the temple is cleaned, the Goddess is bathed, and the doors open for darshan on the fourth day. The long queues receive pieces of red cloth, the raktabastra, as prasada, which are kept as a blessing. In the villages the farming work that had stopped is taken up again.
The story
The three days of Ambubachi are counted as the rest of the Goddess and of Mother Earth. Their end, when the Sun passes the first quarter of Ardra, is the nivritti, and the restrictions kept during the days are given up. The red cloth that touched the Goddess is believed to carry her blessing for the year.
Which day Anudina gives
Anudina gives this day by the same working as Ambubachi itself: the Sun’s entry into Ardra by the Surya Siddhanta reckoning, and the end of the first quarter (pada) of Ardra. The row marks the end of Ambubachi.
It is kept in Assam. Anudina shows it under the North Indian custom, and under the South Indian custom only when “Show festivals of other regions too” is turned on. A reader who ticks the Shakta lineage in the Tradition sheet sees it too, wherever they are.
The days were compared with the notices of the Kamakhya temple as reported in Sentinel Assam, ETV Bharat, The Week and the Free Press Journal for 2021, 2024, 2025 and 2026; the last days of those spans are 26 June 2021, 25 June 2024, 26 June 2025 and 26 June 2026.
