Bisu is the new year of coastal Karnataka, the first day of the Tulu solar month of Paggu, when the Sun enters Mesha, in the middle of April.
How it is kept
Before dawn the family arranges the Bisu kani in front of the deity: rice, coconut, fruits and vegetables of the season, a lamp, a mirror and gold or coins. The first sight of the day is this kani, seen with closed eyes opened before it. Elders give money and blessings to the young, the year’s panchanga is read in temples and mathas, and the meal is a festive one.
The story
Bisu is the first day of Paggu, the first month of the Tulu and Sauramana year of coastal Karnataka, when the Sun enters Mesha. It is the same solar new year that Kerala keeps as Vishu and Tamil Nadu as Puthandu. In Tulunadu it marks the start of the farming year, and the Udupi Krishna Matha keeps it as its new year. The Mysuru almanacs keep Sauramana Yugadi on the Mesha sankramana day itself, which can be a day earlier.
Which day Anudina gives
Anudina gives the first day of the Sauramana month of Mesha, counted from sunrise: the day the new solar month begins at sunrise. When the Sun enters Mesha late in the day, the month begins at the next sunrise, so Bisu can fall a day after the Mysuru almanacs’ Sauramana Yugadi.
It is a Karnataka observance. Anudina shows it under the South Indian custom, and under the North Indian custom only when “Show festivals of other regions too” is turned on.
The rule was compared with 15 April 2026 and 14 April 2025 (reports from the Udupi Krishna Matha). Those are the only two dated sources found.
