Sauramana Yugadi is the new year of the solar calendar, kept in Karnataka on the day the Sun enters Mesha, in the middle of April.
How it is kept
Families who follow the solar year begin it with an oil bath, new clothes and worship at home and in the temple. The new year’s panchanga is read in temples and mathas and its forecasts are heard, and the day ends with a festive meal.
The story
The Sauramana year begins when the Sun enters Mesha. The almanacs of Mysuru and the plateau keep Sauramana Yugadi on the day of the Mesha sankramana; coastal Karnataka begins the month at the next sunrise, so its Bisu can fall a day later. It is the same solar new year that Kerala keeps as Vishu and Tamil Nadu as Puthandu.
Which day Anudina gives
Anudina gives the day of the Mesha sankranti, the day the Sun enters Mesha, as the Mysuru almanacs do. Coastal Karnataka begins the month at the next sunrise, so its Bisu can fall a day later.
It is a Karnataka observance. Anudina shows it under the South Indian custom, and under the North Indian custom only when “Show festivals of other regions too” is turned on.
The rule was compared with 14 April 2027 (the Ontikoppal panchanga of Mysuru), where Bisu is 15 April. That is the only dated source found. The row is new in Anudina 2.0.16.
