A person sharp enough to see the fault of another from far off does not see his own fault even when it is near. The eye does not see its own wound, yet it examines the stain on the moon.
About this subhashita
Agas means a fault or an offence. The pair far and near does its work well here: the far is seen, the near is not.
That the eye cannot see itself is literally true. The poet says wryly that the same eye has picked out the stain on the distant moon.

In a discussion of a patient, another person’s lapse is seen at once. It is good to build the habit of reading one’s own record with that same eye.
Seeing another’s lapse is not itself wrong. Knowing that one cannot see one’s own is the first correction. That is why another pair of eyes is needed.
