ದುಶ್ಚರಿತೈರೇವ ನಿಜೈಃ: ತನ್ನ ಕೆಟ್ಟ ನಡತೆಯಿಂದಲೇ ಸದಾ ಅಂಜಿಕೆ

ಹಳೆಯ ಮನೆಯ ಹಿತ್ತಲಲ್ಲಿ ಕಲ್ಲು ಸರಿಸಿದಾಗ ಹಾವು ಹರಿದು ಹೋದರೆ ಅದು ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಹೆದರಿಸಿದಷ್ಟೇ ನಮ್ಮಿಂದಲೂ ಹೆದರಿರುತ್ತದೆ.

ಈ ಆರ್ಯಾ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಹಾವಿನ ಅದೇ ಗಾಬರಿಯನ್ನು ದುರಾತ್ಮನ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಹೋಲಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

दुश्चरितैरेव निजैर्भवति दुरात्मा विशङ्कितो नित्यम्

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (IAST)

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ದುಶ್ಚರಿತೈರೇವ (दुश्चरितैरेव, duścaritaireva) = ಕೆಟ್ಟ ನಡತೆಗಳಿಂದಲೇ (by misdeeds alone)
ನಿಜೈಃ (निजैः, nijaiḥ) = ತನ್ನ ಸ್ವಂತದ (his own)
ಭವತಿ (भवति, bhavati) = ಆಗುತ್ತಾನೆ (becomes)
ದುರಾತ್ಮಾ (दुरात्मा, durātmā) = ದುರಾತ್ಮ (the evil-minded)
ವಿಶಂಕಿತೋ (विशङ्कितो, viśaṅkito) = ಶಂಕೆಯಿಂದ ತುಂಬಿದವನು (full of suspicion)
ನಿತ್ಯಮ್ (नित्यम्, nityam) = ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ (always)
ದರ್ಶನಪಥಮಾಪನ್ನಂ (दर्शनपथमापन्नं, darśanapathamāpannaṃ) = ಕಣ್ಣಿನ ದಾರಿಗೆ ಬಂದ (that has come into the path of sight)
ಪನ್ನಗಕುಲಮಾಕುಲೀಭವತಿ (पन्नगकुलमाकुलीभवति, pannagakulamākulībhavati) = ಹಾವಿನ ಕುಲ ಕಲಕಿ ಹೋಗುತ್ತದೆ (the serpent tribe is thrown into a flutter)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ದುರಾತ್ಮ ತನ್ನ ಕೆಟ್ಟ ನಡತೆಗಳಿಂದಲೇ ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ ಶಂಕೆಯಿಂದ ತುಂಬಿರುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಯಾರದೋ ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಬಿದ್ದ ಹಾವಿನ ಹಿಂಡು ಕಲಕಿ ಹೋಗುವಂತೆ ಅವನ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಕಲಕುತ್ತದೆ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

By his own misdeeds alone the evil-minded man is always full of suspicion. Like a brood of snakes thrown into a flutter when they come into view, his mind is shaken.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ನಿಜ ಎಂದರೆ ತನ್ನದೇ. ಯಾರೂ ಅವನನ್ನು ಬೆದರಿಸಿಲ್ಲ, ಅವನ ಭಯಕ್ಕೆ ಮೂಲ ಅವನ ನಡತೆಯೇ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಒತ್ತಿ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.

Nija means his own. No one has threatened him. The verse stresses that his conduct is the source of his fear.

ಪನ್ನಗ ಎಂದರೆ ಹಾವು, ಅಂದರೆ ನೆಲದ ಮೇಲೆ ಜಾರಿ ಹೋಗುವುದು. ಕುಲ ಎಂದಿರುವುದರಿಂದ ಒಬ್ಬ ಹಾವಲ್ಲ, ಇಡೀ ಗುಂಪೇ ಗಾಬರಿಯಾಗುವ ಚಿತ್ರ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ.

Pannaga is a snake. Because it says kula, the picture is not of one snake but of a whole brood in alarm.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಮುಚ್ಚಿಡಬೇಕಾದದ್ದು ಇರುವವನಿಗೆ ಯಾರ ನೋಟವೂ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಯಂತೆ ಕಾಣುತ್ತದೆ. ಮನಸ್ಸಿನ ನೆಮ್ಮದಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ನಡತೆಯ ಫಲ.

To a man with something to hide every glance looks like a question. Peace of mind is mostly the fruit of conduct.

ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬರು ಅತಿಯಾಗಿ ಅಂಜುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎಂದ ಮಾತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಅವರು ತಪ್ಪಿತಸ್ಥರು ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗದು. ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಹೇಳುವುದು ದುರಾತ್ಮನ ವಿಷಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತ್ರ.

That someone is very fearful does not make him guilty. The verse speaks of the evil-minded only.
