evameva nahi jīvyate khalāttatra kā nṛpativallabhe kathā
pūrvameva hi suduḥsaho’nalaḥ kiṃ punaḥ prabalavāyuneritaḥ

- ನಹಿ (नहि, nahi) = ಖಂಡಿತ ಇಲ್ಲ (not at all)
- ಜೀವ್ಯತೇ (जीव्यते, jīvyate) = ಬದುಕಲಾಗುವುದು (can one live)
- ಖಲಾತ್ತತ್ರ (खलात्तत्र, khalāttatra) = ಖಲನಿಂದ, ಅಂಥಲ್ಲಿ (because of the wicked, in that case)

- ಪ್ರಬಲವಾಯುನೇರಿತಃ (प्रबलवायुनेरितः, prabalavāyuneritaḥ) = ಬಲವಾದ ಗಾಳಿಯಿಂದ ಪ್ರೇರಿತವಾದರೆ (when driven by a strong wind)
As things are, one cannot live because of the wicked. What then need be said when he is the king’s favourite? Fire is hard to bear to begin with, so what of it when driven by a strong wind?
About this subhashita
This is an argument in two steps. First, life is hard with a wicked man at all, and then harder still once power joins him. The verse is built on this sequence.
Fire and wind here are a pair that strengthen each other. The wicked man is the fire and the king’s favour is the wind.

For life today
Today the king is whoever stands near power. When a troublesome person gains the backing of authority, it is wise to keep a careful distance.
And when power comes to our own hands, we should also check whether we are becoming that wind ourselves.
