Alas, the crooked-minded world, leaving aside the flood of merits, has said of old that the water of that ocean, the treasure-house of hosts of merits, is salty. In the world, for slanderous minds whose every sense is set on pursuing flaws, the gaze is on the fault and there is no fondness for merits.
About this subhashita
Ratnakara means a mine of jewels, the ocean. It is true that the ocean water is salty. But to leave out the jewels and mention only the salt is a way of telling half the truth.
Chidra means a hole or a flaw. The phrase that every sense has climbed upon the search gives the picture of a whole body set out on inspection.

For life today
In the work of criticism, finding faults is necessary. But if the habit grows of naming only the fault and never seeing the merit, the criticism is only half. This watchfulness is needed in a place of learning today.
The verse seems to grant that the man who said salty told no lie. It is not that faults must not be named, but that one’s fondness must not rest on faults alone.
