ಖಲೇಷು ಸತ್ಸು ನಿರ್ಯಾತಾ: ಕಳ್ಳರ ಊರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ರತ್ನ ಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಪಜೀತಿ

ಜಾತ್ರೆಯ ಜನಜಂಗುಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಜೇಬುಗಳ್ಳರು ಇದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂದು ಗೊತ್ತಿದ್ದೂ ಚಿನ್ನದ ಸರ ಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಹಣ ಹಿಡಿದು ಹೋದವನ ಪಾಡು ಏನಾದೀತು ಎಂದು ಯೋಚಿಸಿ ನೋಡಿ.

ಈ ಅನುಷ್ಟುಪ್ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಮಾತು ಅದೇ. ಗುಣಗಳನ್ನು ಗಳಿಸಲು ಹೊರಟವನು ದುಷ್ಟರ ನಡುವೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿಹಾಕಿಕೊಂಡಾಗ ಆಗುವ ಫಜೀತಿಯನ್ನು ಅದು ಕಳ್ಳರ ಊರಿನ ಉಪಮೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.

खलेषु सत्सु निर्याता वयमर्जयितुं गुणान्
इयं सा तस्करग्रामे रत्नक्रयविडम्बना

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಖಲೇಷು (खलेषु, khaleṣu) = ದುಷ್ಟರು (among the wicked)
ಸತ್ಸು (सत्सु, satsu) = ಇರುವಾಗ (while they exist)
ನಿರ್ಯಾತಾಃ (निर्याताः, niryātāḥ) = ಹೊರಟವರು (set out)
ವಯಮ್ (वयम्, vayam) = ನಾವು (we)
ಅರ್ಜಯಿತುಮ್ (अर्जयितुम्, arjayitum) = ಗಳಿಸಲು (to earn)
ಗುಣಾನ್ (गुणान्, guṇān) = ಗುಣಗಳನ್ನು (virtues)
ಇಯಂ (इयं, iyaṃ) = ಇದು (this)
ಸಾ (सा, sā) = ಅದು (that very)
ತಸ್ಕರಗ್ರಾಮೇ (तस्करग्रामे, taskaragrāme) = ಕಳ್ಳರ ಊರಿನಲ್ಲಿ (in a village of thieves)
ರತ್ನಕ್ರಯವಿಡಂಬನಾ (रत्नक्रयविडम्बना, ratnakrayaviḍambanā) = ರತ್ನ ಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಪಜೀತಿ (the farce of buying jewels)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ದುಷ್ಟರು ಇರುವ ಕಡೆ ಗುಣಗಳನ್ನು ಗಳಿಸಲು ನಾವು ಹೊರಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಇದು ಕಳ್ಳರ ಊರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ರತ್ನ ಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಹೋದ ಪಜೀತಿಯಂತೆಯೇ ಆಯಿತು.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

We have set out to earn virtues while the wicked are around. This is just the farce of going to buy jewels in a village of thieves.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ವಿಡಂಬನಾ ಎಂದರೆ ಅಣಕ, ಅಥವಾ ಕೈಗೂಡದ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನದ ಫಜೀತಿ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥ ಹೊಂದುತ್ತದೆ: ನಮ್ಮ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಅಣಕವೂ ಆಗುತ್ತದೆ, ಕೈಗೂಡುವುದೂ ಇಲ್ಲ.

Vidambana means mockery, or the farce of an effort that cannot succeed. Both fit here: our effort becomes a mockery and does not succeed.

ರತ್ನ ಎಂಬುದು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಗುಣಗಳಿಗೆ ಹೋಲಿಕೆ. ಗುಣ ಅಮೂಲ್ಯ, ಆದರೆ ಅದನ್ನು ಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಸ್ಥಳ ಕಳ್ಳರ ಊರು. ಹೋಲಿಕೆಯ ಎರಡೂ ತುದಿ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಹೊಂದಿಕೊಂಡಿದೆ.

Ratna, the jewel, stands for the virtues. Virtue is priceless, but the place where we try to buy it is a village of thieves. Both ends of the comparison are placed with care.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಕಲಿಕೆಗೆ ಬೇಕಾದ ವಾತಾವರಣ ಹೇಗಿದೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ನೋಡಿಯೇ ಕಲಿಕೆಯ ಸ್ಥಳ ಆರಿಸಬೇಕು. ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಗುರುವೂ ಕೆಟ್ಟ ವಾತಾವರಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಏನನ್ನೂ ಕೊಡಲಾರ.

The place of learning should be chosen after looking at the atmosphere it offers. Even a good teacher can give little in a bad atmosphere.

ಇದೊಂದು ಬೇಸರದ ಮಾತು, ಬಿಟ್ಟುಬಿಡಿ ಎಂಬ ಉಪದೇಶವಲ್ಲ. ದುಷ್ಟರ ನಡುವೆಯೂ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಬೇಕಾದಾಗ ನಾವು ಏನು ಕಳೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಬಹುದು ಎಂಬ ಎಚ್ಚರ ಇರಲಿ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.

This is a rueful remark, not advice to give up. It asks that when we must work among the wicked, we stay alert to what we may lose.
