Poison cannot be made nectar even by a hundred efforts. The neem does not give up its bitterness though it stands in a lake of milk. In the same way the wicked man, however long, does not speak the noble speech that is familiar with merit. How could iron, blown hot with force, take a golden form?

About this subhashita

There are three pictures, poison, neem and iron. All say one thing: nature does not change by outside treatment. We read the lake of milk as a stand-in for the company of the good.

Heated iron glows red and may look like gold. Once cooled it is iron again. The verse seems to call to mind that passing glow.

For life today

Before setting out to change anyone’s nature, one must count the cost. He who tries a hundred times to sweeten neem ends up only tired.

But this is not a call to give anyone up. Neem, though bitter, has its own uses. Knowing its nature and adjusting our expectation is the way.
