About this subhashita

Peshala means soft and charming, parusha means rough. The two words stand face to face in the two halves.

Malayaja means born of the Malaya mountain, that is, sandal. Sandal paste is widely held to cool the skin, and the verse uses just that for its comparison.

For life today

A learner gains more from a senior who points out the error, even roughly, than from one who pats the back sweetly and says nothing.

But not every rough word is goodness. The comparison holds only when concern for the listener lies behind it.
