It is the thoroughly wicked who overpower the virtuous, take hold of the yoke and move on ahead. What floats on top of the ocean is only straw and wood, not jewels.
About this subhashita
Dhura means a yoke, and the same word also carries the senses of burden and of the front position. We have read it as seizing the responsibility or the place that the virtuous would have carried. Both senses are possible.
The straw floats because it is light, and the jewel stays at the bottom because it is heavy. The irony of this example is that lightness itself is what brings one to the top. Jaladhi means the ocean.

For life today
Those at the front are not all fit, and those at the back are not all unfit. In weighing anyone, we may look at what they have done rather than where they stand.
The jewels at the bottom do not rise by themselves. An institution or a team has to make the effort to look for its quiet, good workers.
