When others stir it up with arrogance, even dust is disturbed. But when someone comes asking, the great one does not strive to hold even his own life as treasure, let alone money.
About this subhashita
Some words in the first line can be read in more than one way. We have taken it as: even a lowly thing is roused if touched with arrogance.
Dhanayitum means to regard as wealth, to cling to as precious. Saying he does not cling even to life is deliberate exaggeration.

For life today
Arrogance towards someone who asks makes even the giver’s gift small. Meeting the asker with respect is the first step of giving well.
The verse speaks in the language of comparison. It need not be taken literally as a call to give until nothing is left. It only measures the size of the giving heart.
