svādhīnaiva samṛddhirjanopajīvyatvamucchrayaścāyā
satpuṃso marubhūriva jīvanamātraṃ samāśāsyam

  • ಸ್ವಾಧೀನಾ ಏವ (स्वाधीना एव, svādhīnā eva) = ತನ್ನ ಅಧೀನದಲ್ಲೇ ಇರುವುದು (only what is in his own keeping)
  • ಜನೋಪಜೀವ್ಯತ್ವಮ್ (जनोपजीव्यत्वम्, janopajīvyatvam) = ಜನರಿಗೆ ಆಧಾರವಾಗಿ ಬದುಕಿಗೆ ದಾರಿಯಾಗುವುದು (being a means of living for people)
  • ಸತ್ಪುಂಸಃ (सत्पुंसः, satpuṃsaḥ) = ಸಜ್ಜನನ (of the good man)
  • ಸಮಾಶಾಸ್ಯಮ್ (समाशास्यम्, samāśāsyam) = ಬಯಸಬೇಕಾದುದು (what is to be wished for)

A good man’s prosperity is wholly his own to command. His standing is that people can live by him, and it is like shade. Like desert land, he asks only for what is needed to live. The reading of the last line follows the printed text.

About this subhashita

In the second line the word jivana can mean both life and water. With the desert in the picture, the sense of water fits naturally.

The reading of the last word of the first line follows the printed book and may be slightly uncertain. We have taken it in its most natural sense, shade.

For life today

Wealth does not weigh on one who counts himself by how many lean on him. A teacher who shares what he knows grows richer in the same way.

Keeping one’s own needs small is not possible for everyone, and the verse offers it as an ideal. It need not be taken as financial advice.
