The wise cannot speak of the faults of others, even real ones, the way one speaks of one’s own merits. But the crooked tell of the faults of others, even unreal ones, as if they were their own merits.

About this subhashita

Both lines open with the same words: svagunaniva paradoshan. By setting one phrase in both lines the poet turns the sense around. In the first line sat is a real fault, in the second asat is an unreal one.

Iva means like, a comparison. The sense is clear if one reads it as the zest with which one speaks of one’s own merits. That is our reading, the verse does not use a word for zest.

For life today

There is a small pleasure in telling the faults of others. Once that pleasure is recognised it is easier to stop talking.

In a medical discussion it is sometimes necessary to name a colleague’s real error. Then there is a difference between saying it coolly for the patient’s sake and saying it with relish.
