About this subhashita

Shilimukha means an arrow. The construction of the phrase digante hridaye na durataha is somewhat loose. We have taken it in the sense of the arrow falling far off without reaching the heart.

Marma means a tender spot of the body. The figure of a word striking the marma is still alive in Kannada. The poet grants that the mind too has such a spot.

For life today

When we teach, a word of correction may land on the learner’s tender spot. To say it with that in mind is part of a teacher’s duty.

From the listener’s side, not carrying another’s harsh word about day and night is also a strength. It is not easy, but it is possible.
