Some people are cruel on the surface, like the edge of a sword, and fearful like snakes. Within, they are truly like teachers who could initiate even the grape into sweetness, and they excel.
About this subhashita
The printed reading of this verse is a little unclear. We have kept the compound as in the book, and its reading may be slightly uncertain. We have given the most natural sense.
A dikshaguru is a teacher who initiates and instructs. A teacher who would teach the grape its sweetness is an exaggeration, a praise meaning sweeter even than the grape.

For life today
The verse reminds us not to judge people by the roughness of a first meeting. Many good teachers look stern from the outside.
It should not be used to excuse cruelty. The sweetness within must be real, and time will show it.
