They do not weigh the heavy and light of letters, nor greatness and smallness. They examine neither the form of anything nor the person. So how can there be talk of metres or of conduct. They do not fear ill fame and do not fear the great. Death, the foolish poet, the wicked man, the bad king and the thief act alike. The joins of a few words allow other readings, and this is the broad sense.

About this subhashita

Several words carry two senses. Guru and laghu are heavy and light syllables, and also greatness and smallness. Vritta means both metre and conduct. The poet ignores metre, the wicked man ignores conduct.

Adding death to the list is the verse’s sting. Death looks at nobody’s worth, and the foolish poet likewise looks at no rule. Finding a poet in the list is this collection’s small joke.

For life today

Dealing with people who decide without checking rules, standards or the person is hard. So that we do not become like them, we should now and then examine our own judgements.

When marking a student’s answer or reading a patient’s report, there must be patience to look at every letter. The verse says by implication that this is respect for the work.
