ಯಥಾ ದೋಷೋ ವಿಭಾತ್ಯಸ್ಯ: ಚಂದ್ರನ ಕಲೆ ಎದ್ದು ಕಾಣುವಂತೆ

ಬಿಳಿ ಅಂಗಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಒಂದೇ ಒಂದು ಶಾಯಿ ಕಲೆ ಬಿದ್ದರೆ ಎಲ್ಲರ ಕಣ್ಣು ಅಲ್ಲಿಗೇ ಹೋಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಉಳಿದ ಬಿಳಿ ಭಾಗ ಯಾರಿಗೂ ನೆನಪಿರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಅದೇ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಚಂದ್ರನ ಕಲೆಯ ಉದಾಹರಣೆಯಿಂದ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದೊಂದು ಅನುಷ್ಟುಪ್ ಶ್ಲೋಕ.

ಯಥಾ ದೋಷೋ ವಿಭಾತ್ಯಸ್ಯ ಜನಸ್ಯ ನ ತಥಾ ಗುಣಃ
ಪ್ರಾಯಃ ಕಲಂಕ ಏವೇಂದೋಃ ಪ್ರಸ್ಫುಟೋ ನ ಪ್ರಸನ್ನತಾ

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)

यथा दोषो विभात्यस्य जनस्य न तथा गुणः
प्रायः कलङ्क एवेन्दोः प्रस्फुटो न प्रसन्नता

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (IAST)

yathā doṣo vibhātyasya janasya na tathā guṇaḥ
prāyaḥ kalaṅka evendoḥ prasphuṭo na prasannatā

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಯಥಾ (यथा, yathā) = ಹೇಗೆ (as)
ದೋಷೋ (दोषो, doṣo) = ದೋಷ (the fault)
ವಿಭಾತ್ಯಸ್ಯ (विभात्यस्य, vibhātyasya) = ಹೊಳೆಯುತ್ತದೆ, ಇವನ (shows forth, in this one)
ಜನಸ್ಯ (जनस्य, janasya) = ಜನನ (of the person)
ನ (न, na) = ಅಲ್ಲ (not)
ತಥಾ (तथा, tathā) = ಹಾಗೆ (so)
ಗುಣಃ (गुणः, guṇaḥ) = ಗುಣ (the virtue)
ಪ್ರಾಯಃ (प्रायः, prāyaḥ) = ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ (mostly)
ಕಲಂಕ ಏವೇಂದೋಃ (कलङ्क एवेन्दोः, kalaṅka evendoḥ) = ಚಂದ್ರನ ಕಲೆಯೇ (the spot alone of the moon)
ಪ್ರಸ್ಫುಟೋ (प्रस्फुटो, prasphuṭo) = ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟವಾಗಿ ಕಾಣುವುದು (plainly visible)
ನ (न, na) = ಅಲ್ಲ (not)
ಪ್ರಸನ್ನತಾ (प्रसन्नता, prasannatā) = ಪ್ರಸನ್ನತೆ, ತಿಳಿ (clearness, serenity)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಈ ಜನನ ದೋಷ ಹೇಗೆ ಎದ್ದು ಕಾಣುತ್ತದೆಯೋ ಹಾಗೆ ಅವನ ಗುಣ ಕಾಣುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ಚಂದ್ರನ ಕಲೆಯೇ ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟವಾಗಿ ಕಾಣುತ್ತದೆ, ಅವನ ತಿಳಿಯಾದ ಪ್ರಸನ್ನತೆ ಅಲ್ಲ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

As this person’s fault shows forth, his virtue does not show so. Mostly it is the moon’s spot that is plain to see, not his serene clearness.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಕಲಂಕ ಎಂದರೆ ಕಲೆ ಅಥವಾ ಅಪವಾದ. ಚಂದ್ರನ ಮೇಲಿನ ಕಲೆಗೂ ಮನುಷ್ಯನ ಮೇಲಿನ ಅಪವಾದಕ್ಕೂ ಒಂದೇ ಪದ ಬಳಸಿರುವುದು ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಶ್ಲೇಷೆ.

Kalanka means a stain or a blemish on a name. Using one word for the moon’s spot and for a person’s disgrace is the pun here.

ಪ್ರಾಯಃ ಎಂದರೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ. ಕವಿ ಇದು ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ ನಿಜ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳದೆ ಮೃದುವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳಿದ್ದಾನೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ದುರ್ಜನ ಎಂಬ ಪದ ಬಂದಿಲ್ಲ, ಆದರೂ ದೋಷವನ್ನು ಮಾತ್ರ ನೋಡುವ ಜನರ ಕಡೆಗೆ ಒಂದು ಕಣ್ಣು ಇದೆ ಎಂದು ತೋರುತ್ತದೆ.

Prayah means mostly. The poet softens the claim and does not say it is always so. The word durjana does not occur here, yet there seems to be a glance at those who see only the fault.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಯ ಒಂದು ತಪ್ಪು ಉತ್ತರ ಅವನ ಹತ್ತು ಸರಿ ಉತ್ತರಗಳಿಗಿಂತ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ನೆನಪಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಉಳಿಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರಾಗಿ ಇದನ್ನು ಗಮನದಲ್ಲಿಡುವುದು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದು.

A student’s one wrong answer is remembered longer than his ten right ones. A teacher does well to keep this in mind.

ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ನಾವೇ ನೋಡುವಾಗಲೂ ಇದೇ ಒಲವು ಇರಬಹುದು. ಒಂದು ದೋಷವನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದು ಕುಳಿತರೆ ಉಳಿದ ಬೆಳಕು ಕಾಣುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

The same tendency may be at work when we look at ourselves. If we sit holding on to one fault, the rest of the light goes unseen.
