There was neither non-existence nor existence then; neither the realm of space nor the sky beyond it. What covered it, and where? Under whose protection? Was there water, deep and unfathomable?
There was neither death nor immortality then, no sign of night or day. That One breathed, windless, by its own nature. Other than that there was nothing at all.
Darkness was hidden by darkness in the beginning; all this was water without distinguishing mark. That which was covered by the void, that One, was born through the power of heat, tapas.
In the beginning desire arose in it, the first seed of mind. Seers, searching in their hearts with wisdom, found the bond of existence in non-existence.
Their cord was stretched across. Was there below? Was there above? There were bearers of seed, there were great powers; below was self-power, above was impulse.
Who truly knows? Who here can say where it was born, where this creation came from? The gods came after its creation. Who then knows where it came from?
Where this creation came from, whether it was made or not made, the one who watches over it in the highest heaven, he surely knows. Or perhaps he does not know.
About this hymn

The name nasadiya comes from its opening words, na asat asit, there was no non-existence. The hymn also appears in the Taittiriya Brahmana.

Translations of this hymn differ widely. Tapas is rendered as heat, austerity or meditation. The fifth mantra is especially obscure; its word rashmi is read both as a ray of light and as a cord. What is given here is one of the common readings.

Sayanacharya explains the hymn in terms of Brahman and maya. Modern readers find in it a scientific curiosity about the origin of the universe. Both readings honour the humility of its last line.

The accented text follows the 2026 collection of Vedic hymns prepared by Aprameya of Udupi. How to read the marks: a line below a syllable is anudatta, a vertical stroke above is svarita, a double stroke above is the long svarita. Learning from a teacher remains the right way.

For life today

In medicine the two hardest words are I don’t know. Families want a certain answer, and we want to give one. But for some questions that is the honest answer.

A seer some three thousand years ago said it without flinching. Admitting that we do not know is not the end of the search; it is where the search begins.
