ಕರಣ ಎಂದರೆ ಅರ್ಧ ತಿಥಿ: ಚಂದ್ರ ಸೂರ್ಯನ ಮೇಲೆ ಆರು ಡಿಗ್ರಿ ಮುಂದೆ ಸಾಗಲು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಕಾಲ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಒಂದು ಚಾಂದ್ರಮಾಸದಲ್ಲಿ ಅರವತ್ತು ಕರಣಗಳು, ಪ್ರತಿ ತಿಥಿಗೆ ಎರಡು.
ಇವಕ್ಕೆ ಹನ್ನೊಂದು ಹೆಸರುಗಳ ಒಂದು ಗುಂಪಿದೆ, ಮತ್ತು ಜೋಡಣೆ ವಿಚಿತ್ರ. ಹನ್ನೊಂದರಲ್ಲಿ ಏಳು ಚರ, ಎಂದರೆ ಚಲಿಸುವವು, ತಿಂಗಳುದ್ದಕ್ಕೂ ಸುತ್ತುತ್ತಲೇ ಇರುತ್ತವೆ. ನಾಲ್ಕು ಸ್ಥಿರ, ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದೂ ತಿಂಗಳಿಗೆ ಒಂದೇ ಬಾರಿ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ.
ಚರ ಕರಣಗಳು ಏಳು: ಬವ, ಬಾಲವ, ಕೌಲವ, ತೈತಿಲ, ಗರಜ, ವಣಿಜ ಮತ್ತು ವಿಷ್ಟಿ. ಶುಕ್ಲ ಪಕ್ಷದ ಪ್ರಥಮಾ ತಿಥಿಯ ಎರಡನೆಯ ಅರ್ಧದಿಂದ ಆರಂಭಿಸಿ ಇವು ಸತತ ಎಂಟು ಸಲ ಪುನರಾವರ್ತನೆಯಾಗಿ ಅರವತ್ತರಲ್ಲಿ ಐವತ್ತಾರು ಜಾಗಗಳನ್ನು ತುಂಬುತ್ತವೆ.
ಉಳಿದ ನಾಲ್ಕು ಜಾಗಗಳು ಅಮಾವಾಸ್ಯೆಯ ಸುತ್ತ ಇದ್ದು, ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಥಿರ ಕರಣಗಳು ಕೂರುತ್ತವೆ: ಬಹುಳ ಚತುರ್ದಶಿಯ ಎರಡನೆಯ ಅರ್ಧದಲ್ಲಿ ಶಕುನಿ, ಅಮಾವಾಸ್ಯೆಯ ಮೊದಲ ಅರ್ಧದಲ್ಲಿ ಚತುಷ್ಪಾದ, ಅದರ ಎರಡನೆಯ ಅರ್ಧದಲ್ಲಿ ನಾಗ, ಮತ್ತು ಶುಕ್ಲ ಪ್ರಥಮಾದ ಮೊದಲ ಅರ್ಧದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಿಂಸ್ತುಘ್ನ.
ವಿಷ್ಟಿ, ಅಥವಾ ಭದ್ರಾ
ಒಂದು ಕರಣಕ್ಕೆ ಉಳಿದೆಲ್ಲವುಗಳಿಗಿಂತ ತುಂಬ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಗಮನ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ. ವಿಷ್ಟಿಯನ್ನು ಬಹುತೇಕ ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ ಭದ್ರಾ ಎಂದೇ ಕರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ, ಮತ್ತು ಹೊಸ ಕೆಲಸಗಳ ಆರಂಭಕ್ಕೆ ಅದನ್ನು ಬಲವಾಗಿ ಅಶುಭವೆಂದು ಪರಿಗಣಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ; ಎಷ್ಟೋ ಪಂಚಾಂಗಗಳು ಅದರ ಆರಂಭ ಮತ್ತು ಅಂತ್ಯದ ಸಮಯವನ್ನು ಎದ್ದುಕಾಣುವಂತೆ ಮುದ್ರಿಸುತ್ತವೆ.
ವಿಷ್ಟಿ ಏಳರ ಪುನರಾವರ್ತಿ ಗುಂಪಿನ ಏಳನೆಯದಾದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅದು ಪ್ರತಿ ಮೂರೂವರೆ ತಿಥಿಗೊಮ್ಮೆ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ, ಅಂದರೆ ವಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಸುಮಾರು ಎರಡು ಸಲ, ಒಮ್ಮೆಗೆ ಸುಮಾರು ಹನ್ನೊಂದು ಗಂಟೆ. ಮದುವೆ, ಗೃಹಪ್ರವೇಶ, ಪ್ರಯಾಣ ಮತ್ತು ಹೊಸ ಕೆಲಸದ ಆರಂಭವನ್ನು ಆ ಹೊತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ತಪ್ಪಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಭದ್ರಾ ದಿನದ ಒಂದು ನಿರ್ದಿಷ್ಟ ಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿದ್ದಾಗ ಮಾತ್ರ ಅದನ್ನು ತಪ್ಪಿಸಬೇಕು ಎಂದೂ, ಶುಕ್ಲ ಪಕ್ಷದಲ್ಲಿ ರಾತ್ರಿ ಬಂದ ಭದ್ರಾ ಮತ್ತು ಕೃಷ್ಣ ಪಕ್ಷದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಗಲು ಬಂದ ಭದ್ರಾ ಲೆಕ್ಕಕ್ಕೆ ಬೇಡ ಎಂದೂ ಕೆಲವು ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯಗಳು ಹೇಳುತ್ತವೆ.
ಉಳಿದ ಕರಣಗಳ ಸ್ವಭಾವ ಸೌಮ್ಯ. ಬವ, ಬಾಲವ, ಕೌಲವ, ತೈತಿಲ ಮತ್ತು ಗರಜ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಶುಭ. ವಣಿಜ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದೆಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ, ಹೆಸರೇ ಅದನ್ನು ಸೂಚಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಸ್ಥಿರ ನಾಲ್ಕರಲ್ಲಿ ಕಿಂಸ್ತುಘ್ನ ಶುಭ, ಉಳಿದ ಮೂರು ಅಲ್ಲ.
ಪ್ರಯೋಗದಲ್ಲಿ
ದಿನನಿತ್ಯದ ಬದುಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಐದು ಅಂಗಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅತಿ ಕಡಿಮೆ ನೋಡುವುದು ಕರಣವನ್ನೇ. ಪಂಚಾಂಗ ನೋಡುವ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನವರು ಹುಡುಕುವುದು ತಿಥಿ ಮತ್ತು ನಕ್ಷತ್ರವನ್ನು. ಕರಣ ಮುಖ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಮುಹೂರ್ತ ಆರಿಸುವವರಿಗೆ ಬೇಕು, ಮತ್ತು ಅಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ನಿರ್ಧಾರವನ್ನು ಬದಲಿಸುವುದು ನಿಜಕ್ಕೂ ವಿಷ್ಟಿ ಮಾತ್ರ.
A karana is half a tithi: the time the moon takes to gain six degrees on the sun. There are therefore sixty karanas in a lunar month, two to each tithi.
They are drawn from a set of eleven names, and the arrangement is unusual. Seven of the eleven are chara, movable, and rotate continuously through the month. Four are sthira, fixed, and occur exactly once each.
The seven movable karanas are Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitila, Garaja, Vanija and Vishti. Starting from the second half of the first tithi of the waxing fortnight, they repeat eight times in succession, filling fifty-six of the sixty slots.
The four fixed karanas occupy the remaining four, which sit around the new moon: Shakuni in the second half of the fourteenth tithi of the waning fortnight, Chatushpada in the first half of Amavasya, Naga in its second half, and Kimstughna in the first half of the first tithi of the waxing fortnight.
Vishti, or Bhadra
One karana gets far more attention than the rest. Vishti, almost always called Bhadra, is considered strongly inauspicious for beginnings, and many almanacs print its start and end times prominently.
Because Vishti is the seventh of a repeating set of seven, it comes round every three and a half tithis, which works out to roughly twice a week for about eleven hours at a time. Weddings, house entry, journeys and the start of new work are avoided during it. Some traditions hold that Bhadra is only to be avoided when it falls in a particular part of the day, and that Bhadra occurring at night during the waxing fortnight, or in the day during the waning, may be disregarded.
The remaining karanas carry milder characters. Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitila and Garaja are generally favourable. Vanija is considered good for trade, which its name reflects. Among the fixed four, Kimstughna is favourable and the other three are not.
In practice
The karana is the least consulted of the five limbs in daily life. Most people who check a panchanga are looking for the tithi and the nakshatra. The karana matters chiefly to those selecting a muhurta, and there it is really only Vishti that changes a decision.
