Utpanna Ekadashi

The ekadashi of the dark fortnight of Kartika, on which the personified Ekadashi is said to have been born, and the day the vrata is taken up.

Utpanna Ekadashi is the eleventh tithi of the dark fortnight of Kartika in the amanta reckoning followed in Karnataka. North Indian almanacs, which begin the month at the full moon, place the same day in Margashirsha and list it under that name. It is the ekadashi about the ekadashis: the day on which the observance itself is said to have begun.

The origin story

The account is given in the Bhavishyottara Purana and repeated in the Vaishnava compendia. The asura Mura could not be brought down in the ordinary way, and when Vishnu withdrew to rest, a woman arose from his body, fought Mura and destroyed him. Vishnu named her Ekadashi, since she had come forth on that tithi, and granted the boon she asked for: that whoever kept a fast on her day should be freed of sin and should come to him. Utpanna means arisen, or born, and the day is her birth.

The story is best taken for what it is, an explanation offered after the fact for why one tithi in each fortnight is set apart. It does the work that founding stories do everywhere, and the puranas tell it as narrative rather than as record.

Why this one is chosen to begin with

Because of that story, Utpanna is the day on which a person who means to keep ekadashi for life traditionally takes the vow. A sankalpa is made and the observance runs from it. Some take it at the hands of a guru or in a temple; in Karnataka the more usual thing is a sankalpa made at home before the household deity, sometimes with the resolve limited to a stated number of years rather than to a lifetime. There is no rule that it must be begun here, and someone who begins on another ekadashi has done nothing wrong, but this is the day the manuals name.

In practice

Apart from the sankalpa there is nothing peculiar to the day. No separate puja, no particular food, no public observance in Karnataka. The rules of the fast, the parana and the viddha question are in the general post on ekadashi.
