Amrita Kala

The favourable counterpart of Varjyam, and what distinguishes it from the other auspicious periods.

Amrita Kala, also called Amrita Ghatika, is a period of about ninety-six minutes each day considered strongly favourable for beginnings. It is computed from the running nakshatra by the same method as Varjyam, using the same table of ghatis, but offset by half the nakshatra’s length.

Amrita is the nectar of immortality, and the name marks this as the most favourable of the nakshatra-derived periods.

Why it is useful

Most of the auspicious windows in a panchanga are fixed by the weekday and therefore predictable: Abhijit is always around noon, the favourable choghadiya fall in the same places each week. Amrita Kala is different because it follows the moon, so it moves freely through the day and night from one day to the next.

That makes it genuinely useful when a time is needed at an hour that the weekday patterns rule out. If the only hour available on a Friday morning falls inside Rahu Kala, an Amrita Kala elsewhere in the day gives something to work with.

What it is used for

It is consulted for beginning a journey, starting a course of study, a first transaction, taking medicine in some traditions, and for any act one wishes to see endure. In Telugu and Tamil practice it is printed alongside Varjyam and the two are read together.

A note on the method

Different almanacs compute Amrita Kala slightly differently. The most common convention, the one Anudina uses, places it half a nakshatra after the start of Varjyam and gives it the same duration. Some traditions derive it from a separate table. Differences of an hour or so between published almanacs are therefore normal, and where the timing matters it is worth following one source consistently rather than comparing.
