Parsva Ekadashi

The ekadashi of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada, the midpoint of chaturmasya and the day Vishnu is said to turn in his sleep.

Parsva Ekadashi is the eleventh tithi of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada. It stands at the middle of chaturmasya, between Devshayani and the waking in Kartika.

The names

The day carries more names than any other ekadashi. Parsva is the side, and Parivartini is the turning: Vishnu, asleep since Devshayani, is said to turn from one side to the other on this day. It is also printed as Vamana Ekadashi and, in some almanacs, Jayanti Ekadashi. All are the same tithi.

What is said of the day

The turning is the whole of the day’s idea, and it is a calendar image before it is anything else: the four months have a beginning, a middle and an end, and this marks the middle. The mahatmya given with it, from the Bhavishya Purana and repeated in the Padma Purana, is told by Krishna to Yudhishthira, and the story it tells is Vamana’s: the three steps, Bali’s gift and Bali’s sending down to Patala. The phala said to follow is stated in the usual comparative form, the merit of the vajapeya yajna, and the dana named for it is of curds, rice and ghee.

The other observance on the same tithi

Vamana Jayanti falls on this same day, and in most households the two are not kept separately: the ekadashi fast is kept, the Vamana story is read, and the dana is made. Because Vamana Jayanti has its own reckoning and its own account, it is set out on its own page at Vamana Jayanti, and a reader who wants the jayanti rather than the ekadashi should go there.

Apart from the reading and the dana, nothing in the keeping of this ekadashi differs from the others. The fast, the tithi reckoning and the parana are the general rules on the Ekadashi page. The turning is something said of the day, not something done on it.
