Pausha Putrada Ekadashi

The ekadashi of the bright fortnight of Pausha, kept by couples who want a child, and one of two Putrada ekadashis in the year.

Pausha Putrada Ekadashi is the eleventh tithi of the bright fortnight of Pausha. Putrada means giver of a son, and the vrata is kept with that intention, usually by husband and wife together rather than by one of them.

Two Putradas

There are two ekadashis of this name in the year and they are regularly confused. This is the one in Pausha, in the cold middle of winter. The other is Shravana Putrada, in the bright fortnight of Shravana, during the rains. They carry the same name, the same intention and much the same story, and an almanac distinguishes them only by the month. North Indian practice gives more weight to the Shravana one; in Karnataka neither is a large public observance, and both are kept at home when there is a reason to keep them.

The mahatmya

The Bhavishya Purana gives the account of Suketuman, king of Bhadravati, and his queen Shaibya, who had no child and had grown indifferent to the kingdom because of it. Wandering in the forest the king came to a lake where sages were seated. They told him they were the Vishvedevas, that the month was Pausha, and that if he and the queen kept the ekadashi of the bright fortnight a son would be born to them. The purana says one was. The phala claimed for the day follows from the story and is claimed no more widely than that.

Vaikuntha Ekadashi

The bright fortnight ekadashi falling while the sun stands in Dhanus is kept in the Tamil country and in southern Vaishnava temples as Vaikuntha Ekadashi. Usually that is Mokshada, the ekadashi of the month before, but in some years the solar and lunar reckonings fall out so that it lands on Pausha Putrada instead. The two observances are unrelated and the coincidence carries no meaning of its own; it is worth knowing only because it explains why the same day is sometimes announced under two names.

In practice

Beyond the intention there is nothing peculiar to the observance, no special food and no separate puja. The rules of the fast, the parana and the viddha question are in the general post on ekadashi.
