Shattila Ekadashi is the eleventh tithi of the dark fortnight of Pausha in the amanta reckoning; purnimanta calendars place the same day in Magha. Shat is six and tila is sesame, and the name is a complete description of the observance.
The six uses of sesame
- Tila snana: bathing in water in which sesame has been put.
- Tila udvartana: sesame paste rubbed on the body before the bath.
- Tila homa: sesame offered in the fire.
- Tila tarpana: sesame with water offered to the departed.
- Tila bhojana: sesame eaten, in whatever form the day allows.
- Tila dana: sesame given away.
The last is the one the texts press hardest on. This is among the few ekadashis with a positive act of dana attached to it rather than an abstention, and the giving is the point of the day rather than an addition to it.
The mahatmya
The Bhavishyottara Purana gives the story of a brahmana woman who kept every fast and every vrata strictly but never gave anything away. In the story Krishna came to her door as a mendicant to make the lack visible, and she sent him off with nothing. She reached Vaikuntha by her fasting and found an empty house waiting for her there, because nothing had been sent ahead. She was told to keep Shattila and to give sesame away, and the house filled. The phala claimed is freedom from want, and the argument is plainly about charity rather than about sesame.
Season
Sesame belongs to this part of the year in any case. The dark fortnight of Pausha runs close to Sankranti, when ellu and bella are exchanged across Karnataka, and til with jaggery is a winter food over most of India for the same reasons of warmth and keeping. The vrata sits in a season that was already using sesame heavily, which is unlikely to be coincidence.
The rules of the fast itself are unchanged and are set out in the general post on ekadashi.
