Shravana Putrada Ekadashi is the eleventh tithi of the bright fortnight of Shravana. It falls in a crowded fortnight, between Naga Panchami and the Varalakshmi vrata and the upakarma, which is part of why it is not much noticed in Karnataka.
Why the month is in the name
There are two Putrada ekadashis in the year: this one and the one in the bright fortnight of Pausha. The names are identical and the mahatmyas are different, so almanacs carry the month in the title to keep them apart. A reader looking up Putrada Ekadashi without a month will find two answers, six months apart, and both will be correct.
The name and the mahatmya
Putrada is the giver of children. The account given with this one is from the Bhavishya Purana. Mahijit, king of Mahishmati, had no son and no peace about it. The sages of his court sent him to Lomasha, who told him the cause lay in a past birth and prescribed this vrata, to be kept by the king and by his subjects together, the merit made over to the queen. The phala said to follow is a child, and the texts extend it to the welfare and long life of children already born.
Pavitra Ekadashi
The one thing this day carries in practice is the pavitra. In Vaishnava temples the pavitra, a garland of threads knotted and prepared beforehand, is offered to the deity in the month of Shravana, and this ekadashi is the day most often named for it. The observance is called Pavitropana or Pavitraropana, and the day is then printed as Pavitra Ekadashi. This is a temple observance rather than a household one, and it is not general to every temple; the Vaishnava institutions keep it and most others do not.
In the household the day is kept as any other ekadashi, under the rules on the Ekadashi page. Where a couple keeps it with a particular intention it is usually this one or its Pausha counterpart, and that intention is the whole of what makes it different.
