ಷಷ್ಠಿ ಶುಕ್ಲ ಪಕ್ಷದ ಆರನೆಯ ತಿಥಿ. ಪ್ರತಿ ಚಾಂದ್ರಮಾಸದಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಸುಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯನ ವ್ರತವಾಗಿ ಇದನ್ನು ಆಚರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ; ಸ್ಕಂದ, ಕಾರ್ತಿಕೇಯ, ಮುರುಗ ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ಅವನೇ. ಮಾಸಿಕ ಆಚರಣೆಯಾಗಿ ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಮಾಸ ಷಷ್ಠಿ ಅಥವಾ ಮಾಸಿಕ ಸ್ಕಂದ ಷಷ್ಠಿ ಎಂದು ಹೆಸರು.
ಯಾವ ದಿನ
ಮುಖ್ಯ ಕ್ಷಣ ಸೂರ್ಯೋದಯ: ಸೂರ್ಯೋದಯಕ್ಕೆ ಷಷ್ಠಿ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿರುವ ದಿನವೇ ವ್ರತದ ದಿನ. ಮಧ್ಯಾಹ್ನ, ಪ್ರದೋಷ ಅಥವಾ ಚಂದ್ರೋದಯದ ಯಾವ ಷರತ್ತೂ ಇಲ್ಲದ ಕಾರಣ ಇದು ಪಂಚಾಂಗದ ಸುಲಭ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು.
ಆಚರಣೆ
ಹಗಲು ಉಪವಾಸ, ಸಂಜೆ ಪೂಜೆಯ ನಂತರ ಪಾರಣೆ; ಅನೇಕರು ಪೂರ್ಣ ನಿರಾಹಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಬದಲು ಒಂದು ಹೊತ್ತಿನ ಊಟ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಥವಾ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯನ ಪೂಜೆ, ಸುಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯ ಭುಜಂಗ ಅಥವಾ ಸ್ಕಂದ ಷಷ್ಠಿ ಕವಚದ ಪಾರಾಯಣ. ಸುಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯನಿಗೆ ನಾಗಗಳ ಸಂಬಂಧವಿರುವುದರಿಂದ ನಾಗ ದೋಷದ ಪರಿಹಾರಕ್ಕೂ ಸಂತಾನಕ್ಕೂ ಈ ವ್ರತವನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿಯುತ್ತಾರೆ; ಹುತ್ತಕ್ಕೆ ಅಥವಾ ನಾಗನ ಕಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಹಾಲು ಮತ್ತು ಅರಿಶಿನ ಸಮರ್ಪಣೆ.
ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ವ್ರತ ಮುಖ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಕುಕ್ಕೆ ಸುಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯದ್ದು, ಮತ್ತು ದೊಡ್ಡಬಳ್ಳಾಪುರದ ಬಳಿಯ ಘಾಟಿ ಸುಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯದ್ದು. ಕುಮಾರ ಪರ್ವತ ಏರುವವರು ಹಲವರು ಷಷ್ಠಿಗೆ ಹೊಂದಿಸಿಕೊಂಡೇ ಹೊರಡುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ವಾರ್ಷಿಕ ಷಷ್ಠಿ
ಈ ತಿಥಿಯ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಆಚರಣೆ ಕಾರ್ತಿಕ ಮಾಸದ ಷಷ್ಠಿ; ಆರು ದಿನಗಳ ಆ ವ್ರತ ತಮಿಳುನಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಶೂರಸಂಹಾರದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಮುಗಿಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕ ಪುಟವಿದೆ: ಸ್ಕಂದ ಷಷ್ಠಿ. ಮಾರ್ಗಶಿರದ ಷಷ್ಠಿ ಚಂಪಾ ಷಷ್ಠಿ, ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಮಹಾರಾಷ್ಟ್ರ ಗಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಖಂಡೋಬಾ ಮತ್ತು ಮೈಲಾರಲಿಂಗನಿಗೆ ಸಲ್ಲುವುದು. ಭಾದ್ರಪದದ್ದನ್ನು ಕೆಲವೆಡೆ ಸುಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯ ಷಷ್ಠಿ ಎಂದು ಆಚರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳಿದ ಮಾಸಿಕ ವ್ರತ ಯಾವ ಹೆಚ್ಚುವರಿ ಹೆಸರೂ ಇಲ್ಲದ ಸರಳ ರೂಪ.
Shashti is the sixth tithi of the bright fortnight, kept in every lunar month as a vrata of Subrahmanya, who is also Skanda, Kartikeya and Murugan. As a monthly observance it is usually called Masa Shashti or the monthly Skanda Shashti.
When it falls
The reference moment is sunrise: the day on which shashti is running at sunrise carries the vrata. There is no midday, dusk or moonrise condition, so this is one of the straightforward dates in the calendar.
What is done
The fast is kept through the day and broken in the evening after the puja, and many keep it as a single meal rather than a complete abstention. Subrahmanya is worshipped at home or at a temple, and the Subrahmanya Bhujanga or the Skanda Shashti Kavacham is recited. Because Subrahmanya is associated with the serpents, the vrata is also taken up for relief from naga dosha and for the sake of children, and milk and turmeric are offered at an anthill or a naga stone where one stands.
In Karnataka the vrata belongs above all to Kukke Subrahmanya, and to Ghati Subrahmanya near Doddaballapura. Devotees walking Kumara Parvata often time the climb to a shashti.
The annual one
The great observance of this tithi is the shashti of Kartika, kept over six days and observed most intensely in Tamil Nadu, where it ends with the Soorasamharam. The shashti of Margashira is Champa Shashti, kept for Khandoba and Mailara in the Karnataka and Maharashtra borderlands, and the Bhadrapada one is kept in some places as Subrahmanya Shashti. The monthly vrata described here is the plain form that carries no such additional name.
