Vata Savitri

The vrata of Savitri, kept by married women at the banyan tree, on the amavasya of Jyeshtha in the reckoning Anudina follows.

Vata Savitri is a vrata kept by married women for the long life of their husbands, taking its name from the vata, the banyan, under which it is performed, and from Savitri, whose story it recalls.

When it falls, and the split

Anudina places it on the amavasya of Jyeshtha, taking the day on which the amavasya is running at sunrise. This is the reckoning followed in Maharashtra and in much of the South.

A large part of North India keeps the same vrata on Jyeshtha Purnima instead, a fortnight away, where it is called Vat Purnima. Both usages are old and neither is a corruption of the other. A reader comparing two almanacs will simply find the vrata printed twice in the month, once against each tithi.

There is a second reason the dates confuse people, and it is arithmetic rather than custom. North Indian months are reckoned purnimanta, from full moon to full moon, while Karnataka and the South reckon them amanta, from new moon to new moon. During the dark fortnight the two systems give the same day different month names. So the new moon called Jyeshtha Amavasya in a purnimanta calendar is not the same new moon an amanta calendar gives that name to. When comparing dates it is safer to name the tithi and the moon than to trust the month label.

Where the vrata runs for three days, it is kept from the trayodashi to the amavasya, or from trayodashi to the purnima in the other reckoning, with the full observance on the last.

The story

Savitri, the daughter of Ashvapati, chose Satyavan knowing from Narada that he had a year to live. When the day came she followed Yama as he carried her husband’s life away and would not turn back. Yama, unable to be rid of her, granted her boons on the condition that she ask for nothing that would return Satyavan directly. She asked for sons by Satyavan, and having granted it Yama had no way to keep the man. The episode is in the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata, told to Yudhishthira as an answer to whether any woman had equalled Draupadi in devotion.

The banyan enters the story because Satyavan died under one, and because the tree, which sends down roots that become new trunks and so outlives any one stem, is a reasonable image of a life that continues.

What is done

The women fast, some without water. A banyan is worshipped with water, turmeric, vermilion and flowers, and a thread of unbleached cotton is wound round the trunk, commonly seven or a hundred and eight times, while the circumambulation is made. The story of Savitri is read or told. Offerings are of soaked gram, seasonal fruit, and mango. Elder women of the household are given tambula afterwards, and the fast is broken with the fruit that was offered.

In cities where there is no accessible banyan a branch is brought home, or a potted sapling used, or the worship transferred to a tree in a temple compound. Whether this is adequate is a matter households settle for themselves.
