ಯಮಗಂಡ, ಯಮಗಂಡಂ ಅಥವಾ ಯಮಘಂಟ ಎಂದೂ ಬರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ, ಹಗಲಿನ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಎಂಟನೆಯ ಪಾಲು; ಇದನ್ನೂ ಅಶುಭವೆಂದು ಪಕ್ಕಕ್ಕಿಡಲಾಗಿದೆ. ರಾಹು ಕಾಲದಂತೆಯೇ ಇದನ್ನೂ ಕಂಡುಹಿಡಿಯಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ, ಆದರೆ ಇದು ದಿನದ ಬೇರೆ ಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೀಳುತ್ತದೆ.
ಸೂರ್ಯೋದಯದಿಂದ ಸೂರ್ಯಾಸ್ತದವರೆಗಿನದನ್ನು ಎಂಟು ಪಾಲು ಮಾಡಿ. ಯಮಗಂಡ ಭಾನುವಾರ ಐದನೆಯ ಪಾಲು, ಸೋಮವಾರ ನಾಲ್ಕನೆಯದು, ಮಂಗಳವಾರ ಮೂರನೆಯದು, ಬುಧವಾರ ಎರಡನೆಯದು, ಗುರುವಾರ ಮೊದಲನೆಯದು, ಶುಕ್ರವಾರ ಏಳನೆಯದು ಮತ್ತು ಶನಿವಾರ ಆರನೆಯದು.

ಯಮ
ಈ ಹೆಸರು ಮೃತ್ಯುವಿನ ಒಡೆಯ ಮತ್ತು ಗತಿಸಿದವರ ನ್ಯಾಯಾಧೀಶ ಯಮನದು; ಗಂಡ ಎಂದರೆ ಗಂಟು ಅಥವಾ ತಡೆ. ಈ ಅವಧಿಯನ್ನು ಸಾವು ಮತ್ತು ಅಂತ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿದ ವಿಷಯಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಜೋಡಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ, ಮತ್ತು ಆರೋಗ್ಯ, ಶಸ್ತ್ರಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆ, ಪ್ರಯಾಣ ಅಥವಾ ಹೊಸ ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕೆ ಇದನ್ನು ವಿಶೇಷವಾಗಿ ಬಿಡಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ಬಳಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಯಮಗಂಡವನ್ನು ರಾಹು ಕಾಲದಷ್ಟು ಕಟ್ಟುನಿಟ್ಟಾಗಿ ಪಾಲಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ರಾಹು ಕಾಲ ತಪ್ಪಿಸಲು ಪ್ರಯಾಣವನ್ನೇ ಮುಂದೂಡುವ ಎಷ್ಟೋ ಮನೆಗಳು ಯಮಗಂಡದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಎರಡು ಸಲ ಯೋಚಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಇದನ್ನು ಗಂಭೀರವಾಗಿ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಕಡೆ, ಮುಖ್ಯವಾಗಿ ತಮಿಳುನಾಡು ಮತ್ತು ಆಂಧ್ರಪ್ರದೇಶದ ಕೆಲವು ಭಾಗಗಳಲ್ಲಿ, ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚುಕಡಿಮೆ ಸಮಾನ ತೂಕವಿದೆ.
ರಾಹು ಕಾಲ, ಯಮಗಂಡ ಮತ್ತು ಗುಳಿಕ, ಈ ಮೂರು ಅಶುಭ ಪಾಲುಗಳು ಎಂದೂ ಒಂದರ ಮೇಲೊಂದು ಬೀಳುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಒಟ್ಟಾಗಿ ಇವು ದಿನದ ಎಂಟು ಪಾಲುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂರನ್ನು, ಅಂದರೆ ನಾಲ್ಕು ಗಂಟೆಗಿಂತ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಹೆಚ್ಚನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತವೆ, ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರತಿ ವಾರದ ದಿನದಲ್ಲೂ ಅವು ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ಜಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವಂತೆ ಜೋಡಣೆಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಉಳಿಯುವುದು ಕೆಲಸದ ದಿನದ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಭಾಗ.
ಈ ಮೂರೂ ವಾರವನ್ನೂ ಸೂರ್ಯೋದಯ ಸೂರ್ಯಾಸ್ತಗಳನ್ನೂ ಮಾತ್ರ ಅವಲಂಬಿಸಿವೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಗಮನಿಸಬೇಕು. ಇವುಗಳಿಗೆ ಚಂದ್ರ, ತಿಥಿ ಅಥವಾ ನಕ್ಷತ್ರದ ಸಂಬಂಧವಿಲ್ಲ; ವರ್ಷದ ಎಲ್ಲ ವಾರಗಳಲ್ಲೂ ಅವು ಅದೇ ಕ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಮರುಕಳಿಸುತ್ತವೆ, ಹಗಲು ಉದ್ದವಾದಂತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಗಿಡ್ಡವಾದಂತೆ ಬರೀ ಹಿಗ್ಗಿ ಕುಗ್ಗುತ್ತವೆ.
Yamaganda, also written Yamagandam or Yama Ghantam, is another eighth of the daylight set aside as unfavourable, found the same way as Rahu Kala but falling in a different part of the day.
Divide sunrise to sunset into eight. Yamaganda is the fifth part on Sunday, the fourth on Monday, the third on Tuesday, the second on Wednesday, the first on Thursday, the seventh on Friday and the sixth on Saturday.
For a nominal six-to-six day: Sunday 12:00 to 1:30, Monday 10:30 to 12:00, Tuesday 9:00 to 10:30, Wednesday 7:30 to 9:00, Thursday 6:00 to 7:30, Friday 3:00 to 4:30, Saturday 1:30 to 3:00.
Yama
The name belongs to Yama, the lord of death and the judge of the departed, and ganda means a knot or an obstruction. The period is associated with matters concerning death and endings, and is particularly avoided for anything to do with health, surgery, travel or new undertakings.
How much weight it carries
In practice Yamaganda is observed less strictly than Rahu Kala. Many households that will reschedule a journey to avoid Rahu Kala will not think twice about Yamaganda. Where it is taken seriously, notably in parts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, it carries roughly equal weight.
The three inauspicious eighths, Rahu Kala, Yamaganda and Gulika, never overlap: between them they take up three of the eight parts of the day, a little over four hours, and the arrangement is such that each weekday has them in different places. What is left is a good deal of the working day.
It is worth noticing that these three depend only on the weekday and on sunrise and sunset. They do not involve the moon, the tithi or the nakshatra, and they repeat on the same schedule every week of the year, stretching and shrinking only as the day lengthens and shortens.
