Rahu Kala is the period of roughly ninety minutes each day that is traditionally avoided for beginning anything new. It is the most widely observed of all the time divisions in South India, kept by many people who consult no other part of a panchanga.
How it is found
Divide the time from sunrise to sunset into eight equal parts. One of them is Rahu Kala, and which one depends only on the weekday:
- Sunday, the eighth part
- Monday, the second
- Tuesday, the seventh
- Wednesday, the fifth
- Thursday, the sixth
- Friday, the fourth
- Saturday, the third
For a nominal six-to-six day that gives 4:30 to 6:00 on Sunday, 7:30 to 9:00 on Monday, 3:00 to 4:30 on Tuesday, 12:00 to 1:30 on Wednesday, 1:30 to 3:00 on Thursday, 10:30 to 12:00 on Friday and 9:00 to 10:30 on Saturday.
Real days are not six to six, so the periods shift. In Udupi in September, sunrise is about 6:20 and sunset about 18:30, which makes each eighth about ninety-one minutes and puts Friday’s Rahu Kala at roughly 10:54 to 12:25.
The traditional mnemonic runs “Mother Saw Father Wearing The Turban Suddenly”, the initials giving the order Monday, Saturday, Friday, Wednesday, Thursday, Tuesday, Sunday for the second through eighth parts.
Rahu
Rahu is not a body. It is one of the two points where the moon’s orbit crosses the sun’s apparent path, the ascending node; the descending node is Ketu. Eclipses occur only when a new or full moon falls near one of them, which is the origin of the story of the severed demon who swallows the sun and moon. The nodes move backwards round the zodiac in about eighteen years and eleven days.
The daily period named after Rahu has no direct connection to where the node actually is. It is a fixed eighth of the day set by the weekday.
What is actually avoided
The convention is about beginnings, not about ordinary activity. Signing an agreement, setting out on a journey, opening a shop, a first meeting, buying something significant. Work already under way is not interrupted, and routine matters are not affected. Some hold that Rahu Kala does not apply to acts of devotion or to anything unavoidable, and in Kerala it is considered favourable rather than otherwise for certain rites.
