ದುರ್ಗಾ ಸೂಕ್ತಮ್: ದೋಣಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನದಿ ದಾಟಿಸುವಂತೆ ಕಷ್ಟಗಳನ್ನು ದಾಟಿಸು

ದುರ್ಗ ಎಂದರೆ ದಾಟಲು ಕಷ್ಟವಾದದ್ದು. ಕೋಟೆ, ಕಾಡು, ಕಡಿದಾದ ದಾರಿ. ದುರ್ಗಾ ಸೂಕ್ತದ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಚಿತ್ರ ಒಂದು ದೋಣಿ: ನಾವೆ ನದಿಯನ್ನು ದಾಟಿಸುವಂತೆ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ದುರ್ಗಗಳಿಂದ ದಾಟಿಸು.

ಈ ಸೂಕ್ತದ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಮಂತ್ರಗಳು ಅಗ್ನಿಯನ್ನು ಜಾತವೇದಸ್ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯುತ್ತವೆ. ಎರಡನೆಯ ಮಂತ್ರ ಅಗ್ನಿಯ ಬಣ್ಣದ, ತಪಸ್ಸಿನಿಂದ ಜ್ವಲಿಸುವ ದುರ್ಗಾದೇವಿಗೆ ಶರಣಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ನವರಾತ್ರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇದರ ಪಠಣ ಹೆಚ್ಚು.

1 ಜಾತವೇದಸ್ಸಾದ ಅಗ್ನಿಗೆ ಸೋಮವನ್ನು ಅರ್ಪಿಸೋಣ. ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ದ್ವೇಷಿಸುವವರ ಸಂಪತ್ತನ್ನು ಅವನು ಸುಟ್ಟುಹಾಕಲಿ. ದೋಣಿ ನದಿಯನ್ನು ದಾಟಿಸುವಂತೆ ಅಗ್ನಿ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಎಲ್ಲ ದುರ್ಗಗಳಿಂದ, ಎಲ್ಲ ಪಾಪಗಳಿಂದ ದಾಟಿಸಲಿ.
Let us press Soma for Agni Jatavedas; may he burn away the wealth of those hostile to us. As a boat carries across a river, may Agni carry us across all difficulties and all evils.
2 ಅಗ್ನಿಯ ಬಣ್ಣದ, ತಪಸ್ಸಿನಿಂದ ಜ್ವಲಿಸುವ, ವಿರೋಚನನ ಮಗಳಾದ, ಕರ್ಮಫಲಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂತೋಷಿಸುವ ದುರ್ಗಾದೇವಿಗೆ ನಾನು ಶರಣಾಗುತ್ತೇನೆ. ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ದಾಟಿಸುವವಳೇ, ನಿನಗೆ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ.
I take refuge in the goddess Durga, fire-coloured, blazing with tapas, daughter of the radiant one, who delights in the fruits of action. O swift one who carries us across, salutations to you.
3 ಅಗ್ನಿಯೇ, ಸ್ತುತಿಗೆ ಯೋಗ್ಯನೇ, ಮಂಗಲಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಎಲ್ಲ ಕಷ್ಟಗಳಿಂದ ದಾಟಿಸು. ನಮ್ಮ ನೆಲೆ ವಿಶಾಲವಾಗಲಿ, ಭೂಮಿ ವಿಸ್ತಾರವಾಗಲಿ. ನಮ್ಮ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೂ ಮೊಮ್ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೂ ಸುಖ ಕೊಡು.
O Agni, worthy of praise, carry us by auspicious ways across all difficulties. May our dwelling be broad and our land wide; bring happiness to our children and grandchildren.
4 ಜಾತವೇದನೇ, ದೋಣಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನದಿಯನ್ನು ದಾಟಿಸುವಂತೆ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಎಲ್ಲ ಕಷ್ಟಗಳಿಂದ, ಪಾಪಗಳಿಂದ ದಾಟಿಸು. ಅಗ್ನಿಯೇ, ಅತ್ರಿ ಋಷಿಯಂತೆ ಮನಃಪೂರ್ವಕವಾಗಿ ಸ್ತುತಿಸಲ್ಪಡುವ ನೀನು ನಮ್ಮ ದೇಹಗಳ ರಕ್ಷಕನಾಗಿ ಎಚ್ಚರದಿಂದಿರು.
O Jatavedas, carry us across all difficulties and evils as a boat across a river. O Agni, praised with heartfelt words as by the sage Atri, be watchful as the protector of our bodies.
5 ಸೇನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಗೆಲ್ಲುವ, ಶತ್ರುಗಳನ್ನು ಸಹಿಸದ, ಉಗ್ರನಾದ ಅಗ್ನಿಯನ್ನು ಅತ್ಯುನ್ನತ ಸ್ಥಾನದಿಂದ ಕರೆಯುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಆ ದೇವ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಎಲ್ಲ ಕಷ್ಟಗಳಿಂದ ದಾಟಿಸಲಿ. ನಮ್ಮ ತಪ್ಪುಗಳನ್ನು ಕ್ಷಮಿಸಿ, ಪಾಪಗಳಿಂದ ದಾಟಿಸಲಿ.
We call from the highest seat on Agni, conqueror of armies, overpowering, fierce. May that god carry us across all difficulties; forgiving our faults, may Agni carry us beyond all evils.
6 ಯಜ್ಞಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ತುತಿಸಲ್ಪಡುವ ಅಗ್ನಿಯೇ, ನೀನು ಹಳೆಯವನೂ ಹೊಸಬನೂ ಆದ ಹೋತೃವಾಗಿ ಕುಳಿತುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತೀಯೆ. ನಿನ್ನ ದೇಹವನ್ನು ಸಂತೋಷಪಡಿಸಿಕೋ, ನಮಗೆ ಸೌಭಾಗ್ಯವನ್ನು ತಂದುಕೊಡು.
O Agni, praised in the sacrifices, you take your seat as priest, both ancient and new. Delight your own body and bring good fortune to us.
7 ಇಂದ್ರನೇ, ಹಸುಗಳ ಹಾಲಿನಿಂದ ಬೆರೆತ, ದೋಷವಿಲ್ಲದ ಈ ಅರ್ಪಣೆಯನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸಿ ನಾವು ವಿಷ್ಣುವಿನ ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯೋಣ. ಸ್ವರ್ಗದ ಶಿಖರದಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಸಿದ ದೇವತೆಗಳು ವಿಷ್ಣುಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿರುವಂತೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಆನಂದಪಡಿಸಲಿ.
O Indra, following this flawless offering blended with milk, may we walk in the way of Vishnu. May the gods who dwell on the summit of heaven gladden me here as in the world of Vishnu.
ಗಾಯತ್ರೀ ಕಾತ್ಯಾಯನಿಯನ್ನು ಅರಿಯುತ್ತೇವೆ, ಕನ್ಯಾಕುಮಾರಿಯನ್ನು ಧ್ಯಾನಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಆ ದುರ್ಗೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಬುದ್ಧಿಯನ್ನು ಪ್ರೇರೇಪಿಸಲಿ.

ಈ ಸೂಕ್ತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this hymn

ದುರ್ಗಾ ಸೂಕ್ತ ತೈತ್ತಿರೀಯ ಆರಣ್ಯಕದ ಹತ್ತನೆಯ ಪ್ರಪಾಠಕದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಆ ಭಾಗವನ್ನು ಮಹಾನಾರಾಯಣೋಪನಿಷತ್ ಅಥವಾ ಯಾಜ್ಞಿಕೀ ಉಪನಿಷತ್ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇದರ ಮಂತ್ರಗಳು ಋಗ್ವೇದದ ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ಕಡೆಗಳಿಂದ ಬಂದವು.

The Durga Sukta is in the tenth book of the Taittiriya Aranyaka, the section called the Mahanarayana Upanishad or Yajniki Upanishad. Its mantras come from various places in the Rig Veda.

ಸೂಕ್ತದ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಮಂತ್ರಗಳ ದೇವತೆ ಅಗ್ನಿ. ದುರ್ಗಾ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರು ನೇರವಾಗಿ ಬರುವುದು ಎರಡನೆಯ ಮಂತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ಕೊನೆಯ ಗಾಯತ್ರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ. ಅಗ್ನಿಯ ತೇಜಸ್ಸನ್ನೇ ದೇವಿಯ ರೂಪವಾಗಿ ನೋಡುವ ದೃಷ್ಟಿ ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ದುರ್ಗಾಣಿ ಎಂಬ ಪದಕ್ಕೆ ಕಷ್ಟಗಳು, ದುರ್ಗಮ ಸ್ಥಳಗಳು ಎಂಬ ಅರ್ಥ.

The deity of most of its mantras is Agni. The name Durga itself appears in the second mantra and the closing Gayatri. The hymn sees Agni’s radiance as the form of the goddess. The word durgani means difficulties, places hard to cross.

ನಮಗೆ ಬಂದ ಪ್ರತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸೂಕ್ತದ ನಂತರ ಸರ್ವಸ್ವರೂಪೇ ಸರ್ವೇಶೇ ಎಂಬ ಶ್ಲೋಕವೂ ಇದೆ. ಅದು ದೇವೀ ಮಾಹಾತ್ಮ್ಯದ ಶ್ಲೋಕವಾದ್ದರಿಂದ ಈ ವೇದಪಾಠದಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇರಿಸಿಲ್ಲ. ಅದನ್ನು ಸಪ್ತಶ್ಲೋಕೀ ದುರ್ಗಾ ಪುಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣಬಹುದು.

In the copy that reached us the hymn is followed by the verse sarva-svarupe sarveshe. Since that is a verse of the Devi Mahatmya, it is not included in this Vedic text; it can be found on the Saptashloki Durga page.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ದೋಣಿಯ ಚಿತ್ರವನ್ನು ಗಮನಿಸಿ. ದೋಣಿ ನದಿಯನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲವಾಗಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಪ್ರವಾಹವನ್ನು ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ದಾಟಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಸೂಕ್ತ ಕಷ್ಟಗಳೇ ಬಾರದಿರಲಿ ಎಂದು ಕೇಳುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಅವುಗಳಿಂದ ದಾಟಿಸು ಎಂದು ಕೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.

Notice the image of the boat. A boat does not make the river disappear or stop the current. It carries us across. This hymn does not ask that difficulties never come; it asks to be carried across them.

ದೀರ್ಘಕಾಲದ ಕಾಯಿಲೆಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಬದುಕುವವರಿಗೆ ಈ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಗೊತ್ತು. ಕಾಯಿಲೆ ಹೋಗದಿರಬಹುದು. ಆದರೆ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆ, ಮನೆಯವರ ಬೆಂಬಲ, ಮನಸ್ಸಿನ ಗಟ್ಟಿತನ ಎಂಬ ದೋಣಿ ಇದ್ದರೆ ನದಿಯನ್ನು ದಾಟಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯ.

People living with long-term illness know this difference well. The illness may not go away. But with a boat made of treatment, family support and inner steadiness, the river can be crossed.
