ಯದ್ವೀಕ್ಷ್ಯತೇ ಖಲಾನಾಂ: ಕಾಗೆಯ ಬಿಳಿ ಬಣ್ಣದಂತೆ

ಬಿಳಿ ಕಾಗೆ ಕಂಡಿತು ಎಂದು ಯಾರಾದರೂ ಹೇಳಿದರೆ ಊರಿನವರು ನೋಡಲು ಓಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅದು ಅಪರೂಪ, ಮತ್ತು ಸಹಜವೂ ಅಲ್ಲ.

ಖಲನಲ್ಲಿ ಮಹತ್ವ ಕಂಡರೆ ಅದನ್ನು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಅದೇ ಬಿಳಿ ಕಾಗೆಗೆ ಹೋಲಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಆರ್ಯಾ ಛಂದಸ್ಸಿನ ಎರಡು ಸಾಲುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇದೊಂದು ಎಚ್ಚರಿಕೆಯ ಮಾತು.

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)

यद्वीक्ष्यते खलानां माहात्म्यं क्वापि दैवयोगेन
काकानामिव शौक्ल्यं तदपि हि न चिरादनर्थाय

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (IAST)

yadvīkṣyate khalānāṃ māhātmyaṃ kvāpi daivayogena
kākānāmiva śauklyaṃ tadapi hi na cirādanarthāya

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಯದ್ವೀಕ್ಷ್ಯತೇ (यद्वीक्ष्यते, yadvīkṣyate) = ಯಾವುದು ಕಾಣುತ್ತದೋ (what is seen)
ಖಲಾನಾಂ (खलानां, khalānāṃ) = ಖಲರ (of the wicked)
ಮಾಹಾತ್ಮ್ಯಂ (माहात्म्यं, māhātmyaṃ) = ಮಹತ್ವ (greatness)
ಕ್ವಾಪಿ (क्वापि, kvāpi) = ಎಲ್ಲಾದರೂ (somewhere)
ದೈವಯೋಗೇನ (दैवयोगेन, daivayogena) = ದೈವಯೋಗದಿಂದ, ಆಕಸ್ಮಿಕವಾಗಿ (by a turn of fate)
ಕಾಕಾನಾಮಿವ (काकानामिव, kākānāmiva) = ಕಾಗೆಗಳ ಹಾಗೆ (as of crows)
ಶೌಕ್ಲ್ಯಂ (शौक्ल्यं, śauklyaṃ) = ಬಿಳುಪು (whiteness)
ತದಪಿ (तदपि, tadapi) = ಅದೂ ಕೂಡ (that too)
ಹಿ (हि, hi) = ನಿಜವಾಗಿ (indeed)
ನ (न, na) = ಇಲ್ಲ (not)
ಚಿರಾದನರ್ಥಾಯ (चिरादनर्थाय, cirādanarthāya) = ಬಹುಕಾಲ ಕಳೆಯದೆ ಅನರ್ಥಕ್ಕೆ (for harm before long)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ದೈವಯೋಗದಿಂದ ಎಲ್ಲಾದರೂ ಖಲರಲ್ಲಿ ಮಹತ್ವ ಕಂಡುಬಂದರೆ, ಕಾಗೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿಳಿಬಣ್ಣ ಕಂಡಂತೆ, ಅದೂ ಬಹಳ ಕಾಲ ಕಳೆಯುವ ಮೊದಲೇ ಅನರ್ಥಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಣವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

If by some turn of fate greatness is seen in the wicked, like whiteness in crows, even that does not last long before it turns to harm.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ದೈವಯೋಗ ಎಂದರೆ ಅದೃಷ್ಟದ ಕೂಡುವಿಕೆ, ಅಂದರೆ ಕಾಕತಾಳೀಯ. ಆ ಮಹತ್ವ ಅವರ ಸ್ವಭಾವದಿಂದ ಬಂದದ್ದಲ್ಲ, ಆಕಸ್ಮಿಕ ಎಂಬುದು ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಒತ್ತು.

Daivayoga means a coincidence of fortune. The stress is that this greatness did not come from their nature. It came by chance.

ಶೌಕ್ಲ್ಯ ಎಂದರೆ ಬಿಳುಪು. ಬಿಳಿ ಬಣ್ಣವನ್ನು ನಾವು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಶುದ್ಧತೆಗೆ ಹೋಲಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಕಾಗೆಗೆ ಅದು ಸಹಜವಲ್ಲ, ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಹೋಲಿಕೆ ಹೊಂದುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದು ಉಳಿಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದು ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಮಾತು.

Shaukalya means whiteness. We usually compare white to purity. For a crow it is not natural, so the comparison fits. That it will not last is the verse’s claim.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಒಬ್ಬ ಕಠಿಣ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ಒಂದು ದಿನ ಉದಾರವಾಗಿ ನಡೆದುಕೊಂಡರೆ ಅದನ್ನು ಗಮನಿಸಬಹುದು. ಆದರೆ ಅದರ ಆಧಾರದ ಮೇಲೆ ಪೂರ್ತಿ ನಂಬಿಕೆ ಇಡುವ ಮೊದಲು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಕಾಲ ಕಾದು ನೋಡಬಹುದು.

If a hard person acts generously one day we can take note of it. But before placing full trust on that basis we can wait and watch for a while.

ಅದಲ್ಲದೆ ಇದು ಕಠೋರ ತೀರ್ಮಾನವೂ ಅಲ್ಲ. ಬದಲಾಗುವ ಮನುಷ್ಯರೂ ಇರುತ್ತಾರೆ, ಅದನ್ನು ಕಾಲವೇ ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

Nor is this a harsh final judgement. There are people who change as well, and time itself shows it.
