Here is a strange hardness of heart in the great, who are rich in lofty spirit. Once they have done a favour, they keep away for fear that something may be given back.
About this subhashita
Kathorachittata means a hard heart. The poet speaks admiration in the language of blame, a stroke of praise dressed as censure.
Pratyupakara means the favour returned. It is more natural to read the fear as not about loss to themselves but about laying a debt upon another.

The verse recalls what elders taught: no need to stand before those we helped and wait for thanks.
Yet we who received help should not stay silent. If we cannot give back to them, we can give forward to someone else, and the chain goes on.
