The moon wastes away, is naturally curved of body, dull of nature, a mine of faults, and shines when his friend is in misfortune. Even so the Supreme Lord holds him on his head. Those who are great never ask whether the ones who have taken refuge with them have merit or fault.

About this subhashita

Several words carry two meanings. Vakra is curved, and sometimes crooked in mind. Jada is cold, or dull. Doshakara is a mine of faults, or the maker of dosha, the night.

Mitra means both friend and the sun. The moon shines as the sun sets, which lends the shade of one who flashes out in a friend’s trouble.

For life today

This hits home for teachers. Listing a weak student’s faults is easy, and taking him up as if on one’s head is hard.

The verse does not say to hide the faults of those who seek us out. We read it as saying only that we should not keep a ledger of faults and then abandon them.
