ಸಂಜೆ ದಣಿದು ಮನೆಗೆ ಬಂದ ತಂದೆ, ಮಗುವಿಗೆ ಉದ್ಯಾನಕ್ಕೆ ಕರೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗುತ್ತೇನೆ ಎಂದು ಬೆಳಗ್ಗೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಮಾತನ್ನು ನೆನಪಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಚಪ್ಪಲಿ ಹಾಕಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಯಾರೂ ಅವನನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ.

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಆ ಮಾತಿನ ಬೆಲೆಯನ್ನು ತುಂಬ ದೂರ ಒಯ್ಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞೆಯನ್ನು ಒಬ್ಬ ತಾಯಿಗೆ ಹೋಲಿಸಿ, ಪ್ರಾಣಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಅದು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಎನ್ನುತ್ತದೆ.

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಲಜ್ಜಾಗುಣೌಘಜನನೀಂ (लज्जागुणौघजननीं, lajjāguṇaughajananīṃ) = ನಾಚಿಕೆ ಮೊದಲಾದ ಗುಣಗಳ ಸಮೂಹವನ್ನು ಹೆತ್ತವಳನ್ನು (the mother of a host of virtues, modesty among them)
ಜನನೀಮಿವ (जननीमिव, jananīmiva) = ತಾಯಿಯಂತೆ (like a mother)
ಸ್ವಾಮತ್ಯಂತಶುದ್ಧಹೃದಯಾಮನುವರ್ತಮಾನಾಮ್ (स्वामत्यन्तशुद्धहृदयामनुवर्तमानाम्, svāmatyantaśuddhahṛdayāmanuvartamānām) = ತಮ್ಮದೇ ಆದ, ಅತಿ ಶುದ್ಧ ಹೃದಯದ, ಹಿಂಬಾಲಿಸುತ್ತ ಬರುವವಳನ್ನು (their own, of an utterly pure heart, who follows along)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ತೇಜಸ್ವಿಗಳಾದ, ಸತ್ಯವ್ರತದಲ್ಲಿ ತೀವ್ರ ಆಸಕ್ತಿಯುಳ್ಳವರು ಪ್ರಾಣವನ್ನೂ ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿ ಬಿಟ್ಟುಬಿಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ ತಮ್ಮ ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞೆಯನ್ನು ಬಿಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಆ ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞೆ ತಾಯಿಯಂತೆ: ನಾಚಿಕೆ ಮೊದಲಾದ ಗುಣಗಳ ರಾಶಿಯನ್ನು ಹೆತ್ತು, ಅತಿ ಶುದ್ಧ ಹೃದಯದಿಂದ ಹಿಂಬಾಲಿಸಿ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

The radiant, devoted to the vow of truth, will give up even their breath of life, and gladly. But they do not give up their pledge. The pledge is like a mother: she bears a host of virtues such as modesty, and follows along with a heart utterly pure.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಮೊದಲ ಸಾಲಿನ ಇಡೀ ವಿವರಣೆ ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞೆಗೆ ಅನ್ವಯಿಸುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ನಾವು ಓದಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞೆಯ ಹೆಸರು ಎರಡನೆಯ ಸಾಲಿನ ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ, ಅಲ್ಲಿಯವರೆಗೆ ಕೇಳುವವನು ತಾಯಿಯ ಚಿತ್ರವನ್ನೇ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಾನೆ.

We read the whole description in the first line as applying to the pledge. The pledge is named only at the very end of the verse, and until then the listener sees only a picture of a mother.

ವ್ಯಸನಿ ಎಂಬ ಪದ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಅರ್ಥದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂದಿದೆ: ಸತ್ಯವ್ರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಚಟದಂತೆ ತೊಡಗಿದವರು. ಲಜ್ಜೆಯ ಪದದ ಓದಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಸಂದೇಹವಿದೆ.

Vyasani again appears in a good sense: one who clings to the vow of truth as if to a habit. There is slight doubt in how the word lajja is to be taken.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಉಳಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಸಣ್ಣ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಸಂದರ್ಭಗಳಲ್ಲಿ, ರೋಗಿಗೆ ಹೇಳಿದ ಸಮಯಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುವುದು, ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಸಮಯ ಕಾಯ್ದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ಸಹ ಸೇರುತ್ತದೆ. ವಿಶ್ವಾಸ ಇಂಥ ಸಣ್ಣ ಮಾತುಗಳಿಂದ ಬೆಳೆಯುತ್ತದೆ.

Keeping one’s word includes small occasions: arriving at the time told to a patient, or keeping the time promised to a student. Trust grows from small promises of this kind.

ಪ್ರಾಣ ಬಿಡುವ ಮಾತು ಕವಿಯ ಉತ್ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷೆ. ಇಂದಿನ ಓದಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞೆಯನ್ನು ಕೇವಲ ಬೇಗ ಕೊಡಬಾರದು ಎಂಬ ಎಚ್ಚರವೂ ಇದೆ, ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಮೇಲೆ ಅದನ್ನು ಉಳಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕು.

Giving up life is the poet’s exaggeration. A present day reading also carries a warning not to give a pledge lightly, since once given it must be kept.
