aho bata khalaḥ puṇyairmūrkho’pyaśrutapaṇḍitaḥ

- ಖಲಃ (खलः, khalaḥ) = ಖಲನು (the wicked one)
- ಪುಣ್ಯೈರ್ಮೂರ್ಖೋಽಪ್ಯಶ್ರುತಪಂಡಿತಃ (पुण्यैर्मूर्खोऽप्यश्रुतपण्डितः, puṇyairmūrkho’pyaśrutapaṇḍitaḥ) = ಪುಣ್ಯದಿಂದ ಮೂರ್ಖನಾದರೂ ಕೇಳದೆ ಪಂಡಿತನಾದವನು (by his merits, a fool yet a scholar who never heard a lesson)

Oh, how great is the wicked one’s good fortune. A fool, yet a scholar without ever having heard a lesson. In proclaiming his own virtues he is Shesha, in slandering others he is the lord of speech.
About this subhashita
Shesha is known as the thousand headed serpent, a figure of a thousand tongues. The jibe is that to speak his own praise the wicked one could never have tongues enough.
Vakpati means lord of speech, commonly taken as Brihaspati. The word punya has to be read ironically, as the luck of becoming a scholar without studying.

For life today
People who speak boldly on what they have never studied are found everywhere. In teaching work we have often seen that the length of a person’s talk and the depth of his reading are not the same.
But self praise alone is not the fault. The pair the verse describes is complete only when the praise is one’s own and the stones are thrown at others.
