- ಚ (च, ca) = ಮತ್ತು (and)

The gods did not drink the nectar of the ocean, nor did Hara drink the fierce Halahala. The creator has set both in the speech of the wicked, one outside and the other within.
About this subhashita
This can be taken as a reference to the churning of the ocean, where the Puranas say both nectar and Halahala came out of the sea. The verse brings both onto one man’s tongue.
Nectar outside means the sweet-sounding word, and poison within means the purpose behind it. The poet here outdoes both the gods and Hara.

For life today
Not everyone who speaks sweetly is wicked. But it is wise to watch for a while whether speech and conduct match.
When we speak to others, the verse is a mirror for us too: let the sweetness outside and the intent within be one.
