ಅಂತ್ಯಾವಸ್ಥೋಽಪಿ ಬುಧಃ: ಕೊನೆಯ ಸ್ಥಿತಿಯಲ್ಲೂ ಗುಣ ಬಿಡದವನು

ಕಡಲ ತೀರದಲ್ಲಿ ತೊಳೆದು ಬಿಟ್ಟ ಶಂಖ ಮರಳಿನ ಮೇಲೆ ಬಿದ್ದಿರುವುದನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಅಲೆ ತಳ್ಳಿದರೂ ಬಿಸಿಲು ಸುಟ್ಟರೂ ಅದರ ಬಿಳುಪು ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ.

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಶಂಖದ ಬಿಳುಪನ್ನು ಜ್ಞಾನಿಯ ಸ್ವಭಾವಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಲಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಸ್ಥಿತಿ ಎಷ್ಟೇ ಕೆಳಗಿಳಿದರೂ ಹುಟ್ಟಿನಿಂದ ಬಂದ ಶುದ್ಧತೆ ಹೋಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದು ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಮಾತು.

ಅಂತ್ಯಾವಸ್ಥೋಽಪಿ ಬುಧಃ ಸ್ವಗುಣಂ ನ ಜಹಾತಿ ಜಾತಿಶುದ್ಧತಯಾ

अन्त्यावस्थोऽपि बुधः स्वगुणं न जहाति जातिशुद्धतया
न श्वेतभावमुज्झति शङ्खः शिखिभुक्तमुक्तोऽपि

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (IAST)

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಅಂತ್ಯಾವಸ್ಥೋಽಪಿ (अन्त्यावस्थोऽपि, antyāvastho’pi) = ಕೊನೆಯ ಸ್ಥಿತಿಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರೂ (even in the last extremity)
ಬುಧಃ (बुधः, budhaḥ) = ಜ್ಞಾನಿ (the wise one)
ಸ್ವಗುಣಂ (स्वगुणं, svaguṇaṃ) = ತನ್ನ ಗುಣವನ್ನು (his own quality)
ನ (न, na) = ಇಲ್ಲ (not)
ಜಹಾತಿ (जहाति, jahāti) = ಬಿಡುತ್ತಾನೆ (gives up)
ಜಾತಿಶುದ್ಧತಯಾ (जातिशुद्धतया, jātiśuddhatayā) = ಜಾತಿಯ ಶುದ್ಧತೆಯಿಂದ (through purity of kind)
ನ (न, na) = ಇಲ್ಲ (not)
ಶ್ವೇತಭಾವಮುಜ್ಝತಿ (श्वेतभावमुज्झति, śvetabhāvamujjhati) = ಬಿಳುಪಿನ ಸ್ವಭಾವವನ್ನು ಬಿಡುತ್ತದೆ (sheds its whiteness)
ಶಂಖಃ (शङ्खः, śaṅkhaḥ) = ಶಂಖ (the conch)
ಶಿಖಿಭುಕ್ತಮುಕ್ತೋಽಪಿ (शिखिभुक्तमुक्तोऽपि, śikhibhuktamukto’pi) = ಶಿಖಿ ತಿಂದು ಬಿಟ್ಟರೂ (even when eaten and cast off by the shikhin)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಅಂತಿಮ ಸ್ಥಿತಿಗೆ ಬಂದರೂ ಜ್ಞಾನಿ ತನ್ನ ಗುಣವನ್ನು ಬಿಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಅವನ ಜಾತಿ ಶುದ್ಧ. ಶಿಖಿ ತಿಂದು ಉಗುಳಿದರೂ ಶಂಖ ತನ್ನ ಬಿಳುಪನ್ನು ಬಿಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

Even when he has reached the last extremity, the wise one does not give up his quality, because of the purity of his kind. A conch does not shed its whiteness even when the shikhin has eaten it and cast it off.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಶಿಖಿ ಎಂದರೆ ನವಿಲು ಆಗಬಹುದು, ಅಗ್ನಿಯೂ ಆಗಬಹುದು. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾವ ಅರ್ಥ ಎಂದು ನಾವು ಖಚಿತವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಮೂಲ ಪದವನ್ನೇ ಇಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

Shikhin can mean a peacock and can also mean fire. We do not claim to know which is meant here, so we have kept the original word.

ಜಾತಿ ಎಂಬ ಪದವನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾನವ ಸಮಾಜದ ವರ್ಗವಾಗಿ ಓದಬೇಕಾಗಿಲ್ಲ. ಶಂಖದ ಜಾತಿ ಎಂದರೆ ಅದರ ಮೂಲ ಸ್ವಭಾವ ಎಂದು ಓದಿದರೆ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಹೋಲಿಕೆ ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ಹೊಂದುತ್ತದೆ.

The word jati need not be read here as a class of human society. Read as the basic nature of the conch, the comparison fits the verse well.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಕೆಲಸ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡಾಗ, ಅನಾರೋಗ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಥವಾ ಹಣದ ಕೊರತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮನುಷ್ಯ ಹೇಗೆ ನಡೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾನೆ ಎಂಬುದರಲ್ಲೇ ಅವನ ಸ್ವಭಾವ ಕಾಣುತ್ತದೆ.

How a person behaves on losing a job, in illness or in want is where his nature shows.

ಇದನ್ನು ಕೇವಲ ಇತರರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೇಳುವ ಹೊಗಳಿಕೆ ಎಂದು ಓದದೆ, ನಮ್ಮ ಸ್ವಂತ ಕೆಟ್ಟ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಾವು ಏನನ್ನು ಉಳಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತೇವೆ ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಯಾಗಿ ಓದಬಹುದು.

Instead of reading this only as praise for others, we can read it as a question: what do we keep hold of on our own bad days.
