Appar Guru Puja remembers the Shaiva saint Appar, Thirunavukkarasar, on Sadayam, the star Shatabhisha, in the Tamil month of Chithirai.
How it is kept
Shaiva temples of the Tamil country take out the image of Appar in procession and sing his Thevaram hymns. The day is kept with special worship at Thiruppugalur, where he attained Shiva, and at Thiruvamur, where he was born. Shaiva Siddhanta mathas and devotees read his life from the Periya Puranam.
The story
Appar, Thirunavukkarasar, lived in the seventh century. Born Marulneekkiyar, he became a Jain monk, and returned to Shiva when a terrible colic was cured at Thiruvathigai. The Pallava king who persecuted him was himself won over. He went from temple to temple singing and clearing the paths with a small hoe, and attained Shiva at Thiruppugalur on Sadayam in Chithirai.
Which day Anudina gives
Anudina gives the day on which Shatabhisha (Sadayam) is the star at sunrise in the Tamil solar month of Chithirai. When it holds at sunrise on two days of the month, the later day is taken.
Anudina shows it to readers who tick the Shaiva Siddhanta lineage in the Tradition sheet, wherever they are. The general festivals are always shown; a lineage only adds days.
The rule was compared with 11 May 2026 (Sri Kandaswamy Kovil). Only that one dated source was found.
