Manikkavasagar Guru Puja remembers the Shaiva saint Manikkavasagar, the author of the Thiruvasagam, on the star Magha in the Tamil month of Aani.
How it is kept
The Thiruvasagam is recited in homes and temples, and the image of Manikkavasagar is taken in procession. The day is kept with special worship at Chidambaram, where he attained Shiva, and at Avudaiyarkoil, the temple he built at Thirupperunthurai.
The story
Manikkavasagar was a minister of the Pandya king. Sent with the king’s money to buy horses, he met Shiva as a guru at Thirupperunthurai and spent it on a temple. Shiva turned jackals into horses for the king, which turned back into jackals at night, and carried earth for the Vaigai bund and took the king’s blow. His Thiruvasagam is among the most loved Tamil hymns.
Which day Anudina gives
Anudina gives the day on which Magha is the star at sunrise in the Tamil solar month of Aani. When it holds at sunrise on two days of the month, the later day is taken.
Anudina shows it to readers who tick the Shaiva Siddhanta lineage in the Tradition sheet, wherever they are. The general festivals are always shown; a lineage only adds days.
The rule was compared with 20 June 2026 (a Tamil calendar, Aani 6). Only that one dated source was found.
