ಆರಾಧ್ಯಮಾನೋ ಬಹುಭಿಃ ಪ್ರಕಾರೈಃ: ಸೇವೆ ಮಾಡಿದರೆ ಶತ್ರುವಾಗುವವ

ಮದುವೆಯ ಊಟದ ಪಂಕ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಆತಿಥೇಯರು ಒಬ್ಬೊಬ್ಬರನ್ನೂ ಕೇಳಿ ಬಡಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಅತಿಥಿಗಳು ಧನ್ಯವಾದ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ, ಒಬ್ಬಿಬ್ಬರು ಏನಾದರೂ ಕೊರತೆ ಹುಡುಕುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ಹುಡುಕಿದರೆ ಅದು ಸಹಿಸಬಹುದಾದ ಮಾತು. ಆದರೆ ಎಷ್ಟು ಬಡಿಸಿದಷ್ಟೂ ಶತ್ರುವಾಗುವ ಒಬ್ಬನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ವ್ಯಂಗ್ಯದಿಂದ ಮೆಚ್ಚುಗೆಯ ಮಾತು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.

आराध्यमानो बहुभिः प्रकारैर्नाराध्यते नाम किमत्र चित्रम्
अयं त्वपूर्वः प्रतिभाविशेषो यत्सेव्यमानो रिपुतामुपैति

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಆರಾಧ್ಯಮಾನೋ (आराध्यमानो, ārādhyamāno) = ಆರಾಧನೆ ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತಿರುವವನು (one who is being served)
ಬಹುಭಿಃ (बहुभिः, bahubhiḥ) = ಹಲವು (many)
ಪ್ರಕಾರೈರ್ನಾರಾಧ್ಯತೇ (प्रकारैर्नाराध्यते, prakārairnārādhyate) = ವಿಧಗಳಿಂದ ಒಲಿಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ (by ways, is not won over)
ನಾಮ (नाम, nāma) = ಎಂಬುದು (indeed)
ಕಿಮತ್ರ (किमत्र, kimatra) = ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಏನು (what here)
ಚಿತ್ರಮ್ (चित्रम्, citram) = ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯ (wonder)

ಪ್ರತಿಭಾವಿಶೇಷೋ (प्रतिभाविशेषो, pratibhāviśeṣo) = ಪ್ರತಿಭೆಯ ವಿಶೇಷ (a special kind of talent)
ಯತ್ಸೇವ್ಯಮಾನೋ (यत्सेव्यमानो, yatsevyamāno) = ಏನೆಂದರೆ ಸೇವೆ ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತಾ (that, while being served)
ರಿಪುತಾಮುಪೈತಿ (रिपुतामुपैति, riputāmupaiti) = ಶತ್ರುತ್ವವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದುತ್ತಾನೆ (he becomes an enemy)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಹಲವು ವಿಧಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇವೆ ಮಾಡಿದರೂ ಅವನು ಒಲಿಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯವೇನು. ಆದರೆ ಇವನ ಪ್ರತಿಭೆಯ ವಿಶೇಷ ಹಿಂದೆಂದೂ ಇಲ್ಲದ್ದು, ಸೇವೆ ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತಲೇ ಅವನು ಶತ್ರುವಾಗುತ್ತಾನೆ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

That he is not won over though served in many ways, what wonder is there in that. But the special talent of this man is unheard of before: the more he is served, the more he becomes an enemy.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಪ್ರತಿಭಾವಿಶೇಷ ಎಂದರೆ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ಪ್ರತಿಭೆ. ಮೆಚ್ಚುಗೆಯಂತೆ ಕಾಣುವ ಈ ಮಾತು ವಾಸ್ತವದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೊನಚಾದ ವ್ಯಂಗ್ಯ. ಕವಿ ಹೊಗಳುವಂತೆ ಬೈಯುತ್ತಾನೆ.

Pratibhavishesha means a distinct talent. This remark looks like praise but is in fact a sharp irony. The poet scolds by seeming to praise.

ಮೊದಲ ಸಾಲು ಒಪ್ಪಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ, ಎರಡನೆಯ ಸಾಲು ಮೀರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ತೃಪ್ತನಾಗದಿರುವುದು ಒಂದು ಹಂತ, ಶತ್ರುವಾಗುವುದು ಅದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಮುಂದಿನದು. ಈ ಏರಿಕೆಯೇ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ರಚನೆ.

The first line concedes and the second line goes beyond. Staying unsatisfied is one stage, and turning enemy is the stage after. This climb is the build of the verse.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಕೆಲವರಿಗೆ ಎಷ್ಟು ಮಾಡಿದರೂ ಸಾಲದು. ಅಂಥವರ ಮೆಚ್ಚುಗೆಗಾಗಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಶಕ್ತಿ ಎಷ್ಟು ಸುರಿಯಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಲೆಕ್ಕ ಹಾಕುವುದು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದು.

Some are never satisfied however much is done. It is good to reckon once how much of our strength should go into winning their approval.

ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಬದಿಯಿಂದ ನೋಡಿದರೆ, ಸಹಾಯ ಪಡೆದವರ ಮುಂದೆ ನಮ್ಮ ವರ್ತನೆ ಹೇಗಿದೆ ಎಂದೂ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಕೇಳುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಕೃತಜ್ಞತೆ ಒಂದು ಸಣ್ಣ ಆದರೆ ಅಪರೂಪದ ಗುಣ.

Seen from the other side, the verse also makes us ask how we behave toward those who help us. Gratitude is a small but rare quality.
