On earth neem trees are seen in plenty, and sandal only here and there. The earth is full of stones, and the diamond is rare. The cawing of crows is heard always, but the cuckoo sings only in Chaitra. So, the poet thinks, this world is crowded with the wicked, and good people on earth are but two or three.

About this subhashita

The pairing of crow and cuckoo fits well. The cuckoo sings only in spring, in Chaitra, and the rest of the year it is the crow’s harshness one hears. That is the poet’s observation.

This is the poet’s disappointment, not a census. The pairs run on one rule: the common is plentiful, the finest is rare.

For life today

It takes an eye to spot the rare. To catch a single cuckoo note amid the crows’ noise, one needs the patience to listen.

It is no licence to scorn the world. That it says two or three exist is itself proof that they do, and we too may be one of those two or three.
