ಗೌರೀಪತೇರ್ಗರೀಯೋ ಗರಲಂ: ಶಿವನ ವಿಷಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಭಾರವಾದ ನಿಂದೆ

ಸಮುದ್ರ ಮಥನದ ಕತೆಯನ್ನು ಬಹುತೇಕ ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಕೇಳಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅಮೃತಕ್ಕೆ ಮೊದಲು ವಿಷ ಬಂತು ಮತ್ತು ಅದನ್ನು ಶಿವ ಕುಡಿದ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ಈ ಆರ್ಯಾ ವರ್ಗದ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಆ ವಿಷವನ್ನು ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ವಿಷದ ಜೊತೆ ಇಟ್ಟು ನೋಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದು ಮಹಾತ್ಮರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಆಡುವ ನಿಂದೆ, ಮತ್ತು ಅದು ನಿಲ್ಲುವ ಜಾಗ ಕಿವಿ.

ಗೌರೀಪತೇರ್ಗರೀಯೋ ಗರಲಂ ಗತ್ವಾ ಗಲೇ ಜೀರ್ಣಮ್ ।
ಜೀರ್ಯತಿ ಕರ್ಣೇ ಮಹತಾಂ ದುರ್ವಾದೋ ನಾಲ್ಪಮಪಿ ವಿಶತಿ ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)

गौरीपतेर्गरीयो गरलं गत्वा गले जीर्णम् ।
जीर्यति कर्णे महतां दुर्वादो नाल्पमपि विशति ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (IAST)

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಗೌರೀಪತೇಃ (गौरीपतेः, gaurīpateḥ) = ಗೌರಿಯ ಪತಿಯ (ಶಿವನ) (of Gauri’s lord (Shiva))
ಗರೀಯಃ (गरीयः, garīyaḥ) = ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಭಾರವಾದ (heavier)
ಗರಲಮ್ (गरलम्, garalam) = ವಿಷ (poison)
ಗತ್ವಾ (गत्वा, gatvā) = ಹೋಗಿ (having gone)
ಗಲೇ (गले, gale) = ಕೊರಳಿನಲ್ಲಿ (into the throat)
ಜೀರ್ಣಮ್ (जीर्णम्, jīrṇam) = ಜೀರ್ಣವಾದದ್ದು (digested)
ಜೀರ್ಯತಿ (जीर्यति, jīryati) = ಜೀರ್ಣವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ, ಕರಗುತ್ತದೆ (is digested, dissolves)
ಕರ್ಣೇ (कर्णे, karṇe) = ಕಿವಿಯಲ್ಲಿ (in the ear)
ಮಹತಾಮ್ (महताम्, mahatām) = ಮಹಾತ್ಮರ (of the great)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಶಿವನ ಕೊರಳಿಗೆ ಹೋದ ವಿಷ ಭಾರವಾದದ್ದಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ ಅಲ್ಲೇ ಜೀರ್ಣವಾಯಿತು. ಅದೇ ರೀತಿ ಮಹಾತ್ಮರ ಕಿವಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಂದೆ ಕರಗಿ ಹೋಗುತ್ತದೆ, ಅದು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪವೂ ಒಳಗೆ ಹೋಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ನಾವು ಓದುತ್ತೇವೆ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

The poison that went into the throat of Gauri’s lord, heavy as it was, was digested right there. In the same way, slander dissolves in the ear of the great and does not go in even a little. This is our reading of the second line.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಮೊದಲ ಸಾಲಿನ ಬಹುತೇಕ ಪದಗಳು ಗ ಅಕ್ಷರದಿಂದ ಆರಂಭವಾಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಗೌರೀ, ಗರೀಯಃ, ಗರಲಂ, ಗತ್ವಾ, ಗಲೇ. ಈ ಅನುಪ್ರಾಸದ ಚಮತ್ಕಾರ ಕೇಳಲು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿದೆ.

Most words of the first line begin with the letter ga: gauri, gariyah, garalam, gatva, gale. The alliteration is pleasing to the ear.

ಮುದ್ರಿತ ಪ್ರತಿಯ ಸ್ಕ್ಯಾನ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡನೆಯ ಸಾಲು ಜೀರ್ಯತಿ ಕರ್ಣೇ ಮಹತಾಂ ದುರ್ವಾದೋ ನಾಲ್ಪಮಪಿ ವಿಶತಿ ಎಂದು ಕಾಣುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಪುಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೊದಲು ಇದ್ದ ಜೀರ್ಯತೇ ಸುಕೃತೇ ಎಂಬ ಓದನ್ನು ಕೈಬಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಕಂಠದಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಷ ನಿಂತ ಹಾಗೆ ಕಿವಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಂದೆ ನಿಲ್ಲುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬ ಚಿತ್ರ ಇಲ್ಲಿರುವಂತೆ ತೋರುತ್ತದೆ.

In the scan of the printed copy the second line reads jiryati karne mahatam durvado nalpamapi vishati. We have dropped the reading jiryate sukrite that this page carried before. The picture seems to be that, as the poison stayed in the throat, slander stays in the ear.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ನಮ್ಮ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹರಡಿದ ಸುಳ್ಳು ಮಾತು ಕೇಳಿದಾಗ ಸಮರ್ಥನೆ ಕೊಡುತ್ತ ಕೂರುವುದು ಸಹಜ. ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಹೇಳುವುದು ಬೇರೆ: ನಿಂದೆಯನ್ನು ಕಿವಿಯಲ್ಲೇ ಕರಗಿಸಿ ಹೃದಯಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗಲು ಬಿಡದಿರುವುದು.

When we hear a false rumour about ourselves it is natural to sit and defend. The verse says otherwise: let slander dissolve in the ear and do not let it reach the heart.

ಇದು ಹೇಳಲು ಸುಲಭ, ಮಾಡಲು ಕಷ್ಟ. ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಂದೆ ಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಅಂಟಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೂ ಕೇಳಿದ ಮಾತೆಲ್ಲ ಒಳಗೆ ಇಳಿಯಬೇಕಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬ ನೆನಪು ನಮಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ.

This is easy to say and hard to do. In the world slander does sometimes cling to the mind. Still, the reminder that not everything we hear has to go in helps us.
