ವಾಸರಗಮ್ಯಮನೂರೋಃ: ಸಜ್ಜನರ ಮನಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಅಳೆಯುವುದು ಹೇಗೆ

ದೊಡ್ಡದನ್ನು ವರ್ಣಿಸಬೇಕಾದಾಗ ನಾವು ಯಾವುದಾದರೂ ದೊಡ್ಡದಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಲಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಸಾಗರದಂತೆ, ಆಕಾಶದಂತೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತೇವೆ.

ಈ ಆರ್ಯಾ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಅಂಥ ಹೋಲಿಕೆಗಳನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ಒಂದೊಂದಾಗಿ ತಂದು, ಅವು ಸಾಲದು ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.

वासरगम्यमनूरोरम्बरमवनी च वामनैकपदा

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ವಾಸರಗಮ್ಯಮ್ (वासरगम्यम्, vāsaragamyam) = ಒಂದು ಹಗಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ದಾಟಬಹುದಾದದ್ದು (what can be crossed in a day)
ಅನೂರೋಃ (अनूरोः, anūroḥ) = ಅನೂರುವಿಗೆ (ತೊಡೆಯಿಲ್ಲದ ಸಾರಥಿಗೆ) (for Anuru (the thighless charioteer))
ಅಂಬರಮ್ (अम्बरम्, ambaram) = ಆಕಾಶ (the sky)
ಅವನೀ (अवनी, avanī) = ಭೂಮಿ (the earth)
ಚ (च, ca) = ಮತ್ತು (and)
ವಾಮನೈಕಪದಾ (वामनैकपदा, vāmanaikapadā) = ವಾಮನನ ಒಂದೇ ಹೆಜ್ಜೆಯಷ್ಟು (a single step of Vamana)
ಜಲಧಿಃ (जलधिः, jaladhiḥ) = ಸಮುದ್ರ (the ocean)
ಅಪಿ (अपि, api) = ಕೂಡ (too)
ಪೋತಲಂಘ್ಯಃ (पोतलङ्घ्यः, potalaṅghyaḥ) = ಹಡಗಿನಿಂದ ದಾಟಬಹುದಾದದ್ದು (to be crossed by ship)
ಸತಾಮ್ (सताम्, satām) = ಸಜ್ಜನರ (of the good)
ಮನಃ (मनः, manaḥ) = ಮನಸ್ಸನ್ನು (the mind)
ಕೇನ (केन, kena) = ಯಾವುದರಿಂದ (with what)
ತುಲಯಾಮಃ (तुलयामः, tulayāmaḥ) = ಹೋಲಿಸೋಣ, ತೂಗೋಣ (shall we compare)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಆಕಾಶವನ್ನು ಅನೂರು ಒಂದು ಹಗಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ದಾಟುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಭೂಮಿ ವಾಮನನ ಒಂದೇ ಹೆಜ್ಜೆ. ಸಮುದ್ರವನ್ನು ಕೂಡ ಹಡಗಿನಿಂದ ದಾಟಬಹುದು. ಹಾಗಿರುವಾಗ ಸಜ್ಜನರ ಮನಸ್ಸನ್ನು ನಾವು ಯಾವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಲಿಸೋಣ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

The sky is crossed by Anuru in a day. The earth is a single step of Vamana. Even the ocean can be crossed by ship. With what, then, shall we compare the mind of the good?

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಅನೂರು ಎಂದರೆ ತೊಡೆಗಳಿಲ್ಲದವನು. ಸೂರ್ಯನ ರಥದ ಸಾರಥಿಯನ್ನು ಈ ಹೆಸರಿನಿಂದ ಕರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎಂದು ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧವಾಗಿದೆ. ತೊಡೆಯಿಲ್ಲದವನೂ ಆಕಾಶ ದಾಟುತ್ತಾನೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುವುದರಿಂದ ದಾಟುವುದು ಎಷ್ಟು ಸುಲಭ ಎಂಬುದು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ತಿಳಿಯುತ್ತದೆ.

Anuru means one without thighs, and the sun’s charioteer is known by this name. Saying even he crosses the sky shows how easy the crossing is.

ವಾಮನ ಮೂರು ಹೆಜ್ಜೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಲೋಕಗಳನ್ನು ಅಳೆದ ಕತೆ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಭೂಮಿ ಒಂದೇ ಹೆಜ್ಜೆ ಎಂದಿರುವುದು ಅದರ ಗಾತ್ರವನ್ನು ಚಿಕ್ಕದಾಗಿಸುವ ಕವಿಯ ಉಪಾಯ.

The tale of Vamana measuring the worlds in three steps is well known. Calling the earth one step is the poet’s way of shrinking it.

ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಕೊನೆಯ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗೆ ಉತ್ತರ ಕೊಡಲಾಗಿಲ್ಲ. ಉತ್ತರ ಇಲ್ಲದಿರುವುದೇ ಅದರ ಉತ್ತರ.

The closing question is left unanswered. The lack of an answer is the answer.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಇಂದು ಸಂಖ್ಯೆಗಳಿಂದ ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಅಳೆಯುವ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸ ನಮಗಿದೆ. ಒಬ್ಬ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಗುರುವಿನ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಯಾವ ಅಂಕಪಟ್ಟಿಗೂ ಹಿಡಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ನೆನಪಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

Today we are used to measuring everything with numbers. The verse reminds us that the mind of a good teacher fits no scorecard.

ಇದು ಹೊಗಳಿಕೆಯಾದರೂ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಎಚ್ಚರಿಕೆಯೂ ಇದೆ. ಅಳೆಯಲಾಗದ್ದನ್ನು ಅಳೆದೆವು ಎಂದು ನಾವು ಹೇಳುವಾಗ ಏನೋ ತಪ್ಪಿದೆ ಎಂದರ್ಥ.

Though this is praise, there is a caution too. When we claim to have measured the unmeasurable, something has been missed.
