ಗುಣಿಗಣಗಣನಾರಮ್ಭೇ: ಹೆಸರಿಗೆ ಇಳಿಯದ ಬಳಪ

ಶಾಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಹುಮಾನ ಕೊಡುವಾಗ ಹೆಸರುಗಳ ಪಟ್ಟಿಯೊಂದು ಸಿದ್ಧವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾರ ಹೆಸರು ಬಂತು ಎಂಬುದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಯಾರ ಹೆಸರು ಬರುವುದೇ ಇಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಆ ಪಟ್ಟಿಯನ್ನೇ ಎತ್ತಿಕೊಂಡು ಬರೆಯುವ ಬಳಪದ ಕಡೆಗೆ ಬೆರಳು ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತದ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ವ್ಯಂಗ್ಯ ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇದೊಂದು.

ಗುಣಿಗಣಗಣನಾರಮ್ಭೇ ನ ಪತತಿ ಕಠಿನೀ ಸುಸಂಭ್ರಮಾದ್ಯಸ್ಯ ।
ತೇನಾಮ್ಬಾ ಯದಿ ಸುತಿನೀ ವದ ವನ್ಧ್ಯಾ ಕೀದೃಶೀ ಭವತಿ ॥

गुणिगणगणनारम्भे न पतति कठिनी सुसंभ्रमाद्यस्य ।
तेनाम्बा यदि सुतिनी वद वन्ध्या कीदृशी भवति ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಗುಣಿಗಣಗಣನಾರಮ್ಭೇ (गुणिगणगणनारम्भे, guṇigaṇagaṇanārambhe) = ಗುಣವಂತರ ಗುಂಪನ್ನು ಎಣಿಸಲು ತೊಡಗಿದಾಗ (when the counting of the company of the worthy begins)
ನ ಪತತಿ (न पतति, na patati) = ಇಳಿಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ (does not come down)
ಕಠಿನೀ (कठिनी, kaṭhinī) = ಬರೆಯುವ ಬಳಪ (the writing chalk)
ಸುಸಂಭ್ರಮಾತ್ (सुसंभ्रमात्, susaṃbhramāt) = ಆತುರದಿಂದ (for all its eagerness)
ಯಸ್ಯ (यस्य, yasya) = ಯಾರ ಹೆಸರಿಗೆ (for whose name)
ತೇನ (तेन, tena) = ಅವನಿಂದ (because of him)
ಅಮ್ಬಾ (अम्बा, ambā) = ತಾಯಿ (the mother)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಗುಣವಂತರ ಪಟ್ಟಿಯನ್ನು ಎಣಿಸಲು ತೊಡಗಿದಾಗ, ಆತುರದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಬಳಪ ಯಾರ ಹೆಸರಿಗೆ ಇಳಿಯುವುದೇ ಇಲ್ಲ, ಅಂಥವನಿಂದ ಅವನ ತಾಯಿ ಮಗನನ್ನು ಪಡೆದವಳು ಎಂದಾದರೆ, ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಲ್ಲದವಳು ಎಂಥವಳು ಎಂದು ಹೇಳು.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

When the roll of the worthy is begun, the chalk, for all its eagerness, never comes down for a certain man’s name. If his mother is to count as a woman blessed with a son, then tell me, what is a barren woman like?

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಕಠಿನೀ ಎಂದರೆ ಬರೆಯುವ ಬಳಪ. ಪಟ್ಟಿ ಬರೆಯುವಾಗ ಬಳಪ ಸಂಭ್ರಮದಿಂದ ಇಳಿಯುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬ ಚಿತ್ರವೇ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಜೀವ. ಹೊಗಳುವ ಆತುರ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಬಳಪಕ್ಕೇ ಇದೆ. ಅದು ಇವನ ಹೆಸರಿಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ನಿಂತುಬಿಡುತ್ತದೆ.

Kathini is the chalk one writes with. The life of the verse is in the picture of a chalk that comes down eagerly. The eagerness to praise belongs to the chalk itself, and it halts only at this man’s name.

ಎರಡನೆಯ ಅರ್ಧ ಬೇರೆ ದಿಕ್ಕಿಗೆ ಹೊರಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಮಾತು ಮಗನಿಂದ ತಾಯಿಗೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಇವನನ್ನು ಮಗ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯುವುದಾದರೆ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಲ್ಲದವಳಿಗೆ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡದ್ದೇನೂ ಇಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ತಿರುವು ಕಟುವಾಗಿದೆ.

The second half turns elsewhere. The remark passes from the son to the mother. If he is to count as a son, then a childless woman has lost nothing. The turn is cruel.

ಗುಣಿಗಣಗಣನಾರಮ್ಭೇ ಎಂಬ ಸಮಾಸದಲ್ಲಿ ಗ ಎಂಬ ಅಕ್ಷರ ನಾಲ್ಕು ಸಲ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಎಣಿಸುವ ಕೆಲಸದ ಏಕತಾನತೆ ಆ ಸದ್ದಿನಲ್ಲೇ ಕೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.

In the compound gunigana gananarambhe the syllable ga falls four times over. The drone of counting is in the sound itself.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಯಾವುದೇ ಇಲಾಖೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮಾಡುವವರ ಹೆಸರು ಯಾರೂ ಹೇಳಿಕೊಡದೆ ಎಲ್ಲರ ಬಾಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ. ಆ ಪಟ್ಟಿ ಯಾರೂ ಬರೆಯದೆಯೇ ಸಿದ್ಧವಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ.

In any department the names of those who do the work well are on everybody’s lips without anyone drawing them up. That list is ready before it is written.

ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಕಟುತನವನ್ನು ನಾವು ಯಾರ ಮೇಲೂ ಹಚ್ಚಬೇಕಿಲ್ಲ. ಆ ಅಲಿಖಿತ ಪಟ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಹೆಸರು ಇದೆಯೆ ಎಂದು ಕೇಳಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದಷ್ಟೇ ನಮ್ಮ ಕೆಲಸ.

We need not fix the verse’s cruelty on anyone. Asking whether our own name is on that unwritten list is work enough.
