Great-souled people never hold anywhere against anyone the webs of words spun by tale-bearers who whisper in the ear. Great lakes do not become undrinkable through contact with the poison of snakes.
About this subhashita
Karnejapa means one who mutters in the ear, a tale-bearer. Prapancha here is used in the sense of spread or web.
The meaning can be read in two ways. Either the great do not blame others on hearsay, or they do not hate the tale-bearers themselves. We have followed the first reading.

For life today
Before judging someone on all we have heard, speaking to that person directly is a good habit. This applies most to the whispers of a workplace.
But not every complaint should be waved off as gossip. Looking into a serious complaint is one thing, bending to hearsay is another.
