ನಾಲೋಕಃ ಕ್ರಿಯತೇ ಸೂರ್ಯೇ: ಪ್ರತ್ಯುಪಕಾರ ಬಯಸದ ಸಜ್ಜನರು

ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತಾಯಿ ದಿನವೂ ಮಾಡುವ ಕೆಲಸಗಳಿಗೆ ಯಾರೂ ಲೆಕ್ಕ ಇಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಅವರೂ ಇಟ್ಟಿರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

ಅಂಥ ಕೊಡುಗೆಯನ್ನು ಈ ಅನುಷ್ಟುಪ್ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಸೂರ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಭೂಮಿಗೆ ಹೋಲಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಅವೆರಡೂ ತಮ್ಮ ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕೆ ಯಾರಿಂದಲೂ ಸಹಾಯ ಪಡೆದಿಲ್ಲ.

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)

नालोकः क्रियते सूर्ये भूः प्रतीतं न धार्यते
नहि प्रत्युपकाराणामपेक्षा सत्सु विद्यते

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ನಾಲೋಕಃ (नालोकः, nālokaḥ) = ಬೆಳಕು ಇಲ್ಲ, ಅಂದರೆ ಬೆಳಕನ್ನು ಮಾಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ (no light is made)
ಕ್ರಿಯತೇ (क्रियते, kriyate) = ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ (is made)
ಸೂರ್ಯೇ (सूर्ये, sūrye) = ಸೂರ್ಯನಲ್ಲಿ (in the sun)
ಭೂಃ (भूः, bhūḥ) = ಭೂಮಿ (the earth)
ಪ್ರತೀತಂ (प्रतीतं, pratītaṃ) = ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟವಾಗಿ ಕಾಣುವಂತೆ (visibly)
ನ (न, na) = ಇಲ್ಲ (not)
ಧಾರ್ಯತೇ (धार्यते, dhāryate) = ಧರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ (is held up)
ನಹಿ (नहि, nahi) = ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಇಲ್ಲ (for there is not)
ಪ್ರತ್ಯುಪಕಾರಾಣಾಮಪೇಕ್ಷಾ (प्रत्युपकाराणामपेक्षा, pratyupakārāṇāmapekṣā) = ಪ್ರತ್ಯುಪಕಾರಗಳ ನಿರೀಕ್ಷೆ (expectation of returned favours)
ಸತ್ಸು (सत्सु, satsu) = ಸಜ್ಜನರಲ್ಲಿ (among the good)
ವಿದ್ಯತೇ (विद्यते, vidyate) = ಇರುತ್ತದೆ (exists)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಸೂರ್ಯನಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳಕನ್ನು ಯಾರೂ ಮಾಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಭೂಮಿಯನ್ನು ಯಾರೂ ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಕಾಣುವಂತೆ ಹೊತ್ತಿರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಸಜ್ಜನರಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತ್ಯುಪಕಾರದ ನಿರೀಕ್ಷೆ ಇರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

No one makes light in the sun. No one is seen holding up the earth. In the same way, among good people there is no expectation of favours returned.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಮೊದಲ ಸಾಲಿನ ಓದು ಮುದ್ರಿತ ಪಾಠವನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸಿದೆ ಮತ್ತು ತುಸು ಅನಿಶ್ಚಿತವಾಗಿರಬಹುದು. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಸಹಜ ಅರ್ಥವನ್ನು ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದೇವೆ: ಸೂರ್ಯನಿಗೆ ಬೆಳಕನ್ನು ಕೊಡುವವರಿಲ್ಲ, ಭೂಮಿಯನ್ನು ನೆಲೆಗೊಳಿಸುವವರಿಲ್ಲ.

The reading of the first line follows the printed text and may be slightly uncertain. We keep the natural sense: no one gives the sun its light, and no one props up the earth.

ಪ್ರತ್ಯುಪಕಾರ ಎಂದರೆ ಉಪಕಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರತಿಯಾಗಿ ಮಾಡುವ ಉಪಕಾರ. ಸೂರ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಭೂಮಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡೇ ಇರುತ್ತವೆ, ತಮಗೆ ಯಾರೂ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿರದಿದ್ದರೂ ಎಂಬುದು ಹೋಲಿಕೆಯ ಹೃದಯ.

Pratyupakara means a favour done in return for a favour. The heart of the comparison is that the sun and the earth go on giving though no one has given to them.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಕೊಡುವುದರ ಲೆಕ್ಕ ಇಡುವ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸ ಸಂಬಂಧಗಳನ್ನು ಕಿರಿದು ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ. ರೋಗಿ ಕೃತಜ್ಞತೆ ಹೇಳದಿದ್ದರೂ ವೈದ್ಯ ತನ್ನ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುವ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ನಿಲುವು ಕಾಣಬಹುದು.

Keeping count of what one gives shrinks relationships. This stance may be seen in a doctor who does the work even when a patient does not say thanks.

ಕೃತಜ್ಞತೆ ಬೇಡ ಎಂದು ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಕೊಡುವವನಿಗೆ ನಿರೀಕ್ಷೆ ಇರಬಾರದು ಎಂದು ಮಾತ್ರ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಪಡೆದವನು ಮರೆಯಬಾರದು ಎಂಬುದು ಬೇರೆ ಮಾತು.

The verse does not say gratitude is unwanted. It says only that the giver should not hold expectations. That the receiver should not forget is a separate matter.
