Who, indeed, would relax his suspicion towards the crooked, who see others’ weak spots as if with divine sight, whose hidden enmity sits in them by nature, and who are given over to pretence?

About this subhashita

Marma means a vital spot of the body, where a blow hurts most. Here it is a person’s weak point. Divyadarshi means one who sees as if with divine sight, and here it is irony, not praise.

We have taken the word jatya as the nature one is born with. Dambha means show or pretence. Show outside, hidden enmity within, a list of others’ weaknesses in hand: three descriptions that build one portrait.

For life today

If a smiling acquaintance seems to be keeping a record of our weaknesses, the list of things we say in front of him may reasonably grow a little shorter.

The verse does not say everyone should be suspected. Its question is only about people already known by their conduct.
