Coconut palms, remembering the little water they drank when young, carry their load on their heads and give people water of rich taste to the end of their lives. In the same way the good never forget a favour done to them.
About this subhashita
This is the poet’s fancy. Someone gave the young sapling a little water, and the tree, he says, carries its tender coconuts on its head and gives for a lifetime.
The word load can be read two ways: the weight of the nuts, and the weight of the debt of kindness. And to the end of life suggests that repaying a kindness is not a one-time act.

For life today
Remembering the teacher and the one who showed the way in the early days is a good habit for doctors and teachers alike. The hand that learned today teaches another tomorrow.
Gratitude is not a trade kept in accounts. One may also read the verse as saying that what cannot be returned can be passed on to the next person.
