ಸದ್ವಂಶಜಾತಂ ಗುಣಕೋಟಿಯುಕ್ತಂ: ಬಿಲ್ಲಿಗಿಂತ ಬಾಣಕ್ಕೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಬೆಲೆ

ಯಾವುದಾದರೂ ಸಮಾರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಂದಿನ ಆಸನ ಗುಣವಂತರಿಗೇ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗದು. ಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕುಳಿತವರಲ್ಲೇ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಗುಣ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ.

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಅದನ್ನೇ ಬಿಲ್ಲು ಮತ್ತು ಬಾಣದ ಹೋಲಿಕೆಯಿಂದ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದಲ್ಲದೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲವು ಪದಗಳಿಗೆ ಎರಡೆರಡು ಅರ್ಥ ಇದೆ.

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಸದ್ವಂಶಜಾತಂ (सद्वंशजातं, sadvaṃśajātaṃ) = ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ವಂಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ (born of a good stock)
ಗುಣಕೋಟಿಯುಕ್ತಂ (गुणकोटियुक्तं, guṇakoṭiyuktaṃ) = ಕೋಟಿ ಗುಣಗಳಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದ (joined with a crore of virtues)
ಧನುಃ (धनुः, dhanuḥ) = ಬಿಲ್ಲು (the bow)
ಕಥಂ (कथं, kathaṃ) = ಹೇಗೆ (how)
ಪಾರ್ಥಿವವಾಮಹಸ್ತೇ (पार्थिववामहस्ते, pārthivavāmahaste) = ರಾಜನ ಎಡಗೈಯಲ್ಲಿ (in the left hand of the king)
ಶರಃ (शरः, śaraḥ) = ಬಾಣ (the arrow)
ಪರಪ್ರಾಣವಿಹಾರದಕ್ಷಃ (परप्राणविहारदक्षः, paraprāṇavihāradakṣaḥ) = ಇತರರ ಪ್ರಾಣದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಆಡುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಜಾಣ (skilled at sporting with the lives of others)
ಸಪಕ್ಷಪಾತೋಽಪ್ಯಧಮೋ (सपक्षपातोऽप्यधमो, sapakṣapāto’pyadhamo) = ಅಧಮನಾದರೂ ಪುಕ್ಕ ಮತ್ತು ಒಲವು ಉಳ್ಳವನು (though low, yet with feathers and with favour)
ಗರೀಯಾನ್ (गरीयान्, garīyān) = ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಭಾರವಾದವನು, ಹಿರಿಯವನು (the weightier, the greater)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಬಿದಿರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ, ಕೋಟಿ ಗುಣಗಳಿರುವ ಬಿಲ್ಲು ರಾಜನ ಎಡಗೈಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಗೆ ಬಂದು ಸೇರಿತು? ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬರ ಪ್ರಾಣದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಆಡಲು ಜಾಣನಾದ ಬಾಣ ಅಧಮನಾದರೂ ಪಕ್ಷಪಾತ ಹೊಂದಿರುವುದರಿಂದ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಹಿರಿದಾಗಿದೆ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

How is it that a bow, born of good bamboo and joined with a crore of virtues, lies in the king’s left hand? The arrow, skilled at toying with the lives of others, is base, yet having feathers and favour alike, it stands the greater.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ವಂಶ ಎಂದರೆ ಬಿದಿರು ಮತ್ತು ಕುಲ ಎರಡೂ. ಗುಣ ಎಂದರೆ ಬಿಲ್ಲಿನ ಹಗ್ಗ ಮತ್ತು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಗುಣ ಎರಡೂ. ಈ ಜೋಡಿ ಅರ್ಥದಿಂದ ಬಿಲ್ಲು ಸಜ್ಜನನ ಸಂಕೇತವಾಗಿಯೂ ಓದಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ.

Vamsha means bamboo and also lineage. Guna means the bowstring and also virtue. With this double sense the bow can also be read as a figure of the good man.

ಪಕ್ಷ ಎಂದರೆ ಬಾಣದ ಪುಕ್ಕ, ಅದೇ ಪದಕ್ಕೆ ಒಲವು ಎಂಬ ಅರ್ಥವೂ ಇದೆ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಸಪಕ್ಷಪಾತ ಎಂದರೆ ಪುಕ್ಕ ಉಳ್ಳ ಮತ್ತು ಒಲವು ಉಳ್ಳ ಎಂದು ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಬಾಣವನ್ನು ದುರ್ಜನನ ಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಇರಿಸಿದಂತೆ ತೋರುತ್ತದೆ.

Paksha means the feather of an arrow, and the same word also means favour. So sapakshapata carries both senses, having feathers and having partiality. The arrow seems to stand here in the place of the wicked man.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಕೆಲಸದ ಸ್ಥಳದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೇರೆಯವರಿಗೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಮನ್ನಣೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕಾಗ ಅದು ಗುಣದ ಲೆಕ್ಕದಿಂದಲೇ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿರುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗದು. ಇದು ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಒಂದಿಷ್ಟು ಸಮಾಧಾನ ಕೊಡಬಹುದು.

When someone else gets more recognition at work, it need not have come by the count of merit. That may give the mind some ease.

ಆದರೆ ಇದೇ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಸ್ವಂತ ಕೊರತೆಗೆ ನೆಪವಾಗಿ ಬಳಸಬಾರದು. ಮನ್ನಣೆ ಬರದಿದ್ದಾಗ ಮೊದಲು ನಮ್ಮ ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನು ಪರಿಶೀಲಿಸಿ ನೋಡುವುದು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದು.

But the same thought should not become an excuse for our own shortcomings. When recognition does not come, it is wise to look first at our own work.
